Quick question?

I have a stock 951. With just a intake and cat back exhaust. Not a maf kit. Just filter. If I put a manual boost controller on. I know stofk is 11 psi Can I just crank it to say 14 15 psi and be fine ? I know I need a boost gauge. But do I need a fuel regulator. Or is just cranking the boost fine ?

No, you need to use a chip that is meant to run at 14-15psi. You will go lean doing it with just a stock chip.

I suggest intalling a air/fuel ratio gauge before you start messing around, then no matter what you do you'll have an indicator as to what's going on.

Also someone told me of I was doing boost and chip not to go with a base oem head gasket set. But to upgrade to the race one. Stock can't hold more then 14 psi. Porsche Engine Cylinder Head Gasket Set Wide Fire Ring Reinz 944 Turbo 86-89 | eBay
That's the one I'm buying. Fine?

I'm not sure that's a Racing Head gasket??? I would think that they would be a metal ply with seals and o-rings.

That said, I have a wide fire head gasket, prolly the same one you are buying. I run 17psi. Take time with your torquing procedures. If I remember correctly its like a two day process.

Head Gaskets ( stock )

Before you boost you should make sure that the engine is solid , even though the engine is in nice running condition the , possibility of the head gasket going is usually a matter of time due to the engine age and just gasket deterioration , Ive rebuilt many of the turbo engines and most of them look the same at the time of inspection. The usuasul pitting or the use of h20 causing gasket deterioration, the best best before you send money on turning up the boost ( chips ,fuel regulators, exhaust , turbo ect. spend the money on the cylinder head and upper gaskets and seals . Its not if it a matter of if, it is when the original gasket will fail. Not to mention rod bearing's oil cooler seals , front seal seals, timing belt ect... These cars are very reliable at boost if you take the time and spend the money on the basics.

+1 on the AFR. Innovate makes a nice one, easy to install and setup.

DB Gauges: Air Fuel Ratio Guage

There are several listed on ebay now for as low as $167 for the complete kit. One more thing, if you don't want (or can't) make the mounting plate for the gauges, Lindsey sells them too, they fit under the stereo head unit, or you can do an a-pillar mount...Lindsey sells both.

Maintence before boosting

Additional guages are a great source of info while the car is on the move, but the main priority should be directed on keeping the engine together, most guys out there first thought is turn up the boost and buy as many simple bolt ons as possible due to the ease of instillation or the hype that comes with the differed products. But if you replace the common faliures on the engine first you'll have an engine that you can Boost for a long time forward. Spend your cash on the said basics turn up the boost when the engine is ready for it. ( then you won't be parting out all the goodies that you bolted on like most sell off we are always seeing.
