Oil Leak - From Where?

Can anyone assist with this one? I have an oil leak that goes directly onto the exhaust. It occurs mostly (or only) when parked. Like now, car is on jack stands with an empty crankcase. I drained all oil 4 days prior to this picture, because it was time for a change. Motor hasn't been cranked for more than a week, yet I got an oil leak. Just doesn't compute; no oil in car, engine hasn't spun for more than a week. Where is this coming from?

Hi, check your rear main seal and also check your oil filter housing that houses the oil cooler.

check the rear area of the cam cover gasket. oil leaks from there will drip exactly where you have it pictured and cause an engine fire. ask me how i know.

The same thing just happened to me about two months ago. The rear part of the cam box is where it was leaking. i was at a traffic light when smoke started to come up from the hood. After that incident I stopped delaying the purchase of a fire extinguisher and installed it before i tested my car for leaks, just in case.

oil leak

I had the same leak, it was the rear cam cover gasket. It was pretty easy to change.

The rear cam cover has a cork gasket and are known leakers. Remember to use lock washers on the bolts and about 6 lbs. torque or you will break them. I also use gasket sealer between the cork and the cam tower.

Cheers,
Larry

Oh God does that view look familiar, just finished my clutch job and i think that image is now burned into my head....

My rear cam cover is leaking also and it winds up in that same area.

Lindsey Racing sells a alum. core foam gasket that I'm going to use instead of cork.

If you do use any kind of sealant on the cork gasket, apply it sparingly and let it dry completely before installaing the cap and tightening the bolts. Wet sealant will act as a lubricant and the gasket will squeeze out from under the cap as the bolts are tightened down.

Guys please see images through mirror. I don't think it's the cam box. I'm now painfully leaning towards rear main seal or sump gasket.

Some Closure and Followup Info

This leak was apparently my pan gasket falling apart... notice in the pix that rear passenger side of the pan gasket how it started falling apart/separating? It was less than 100k in miles, but the original gasket (25+ yrs).
