Info needed

Considering doing a 3.0L turbo engine for a friends race car, quick search of the forums and I can't find any information on this project....anyone out there who has done this?

there are quite a few, just bore and stroke a 2.5, or install the factory 944 3.0 block in a 951. tuning it properly is the other hurdle. which path were you thinking?

He has decided on going a different way, when we got into the serious conversation, he was going to start with an absolutely bare 968 block.....no balance shafts, crank, rods, pistons water pump, not even an oil pan....I mean nothing more than a block. Costs added up quickly to the $12,000 dollar range.

He has located a very nicely prepared darten sleeved 2.5L turbo engine built by a well known shop at a very attractive price.

It may be a little cheaper to go with the S2 engine, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. There's a guy on youtube in Germany that has a 3.0 turbo, S2, and he has a video of him going over 170, needle was pegged. Try messaging him.

I wouldn't mind building a 3.0L turbo, but I would want to start with at-least a donor short block. By the time we get all the parts necessary to make it a short block (belt tensioner, oil pan, oil pickup, oil pump, crank, pistons, balance shafts, etc) the price is driven way up. Add to that the cost of a rebuild, new rods ($1000+), new pistons ($1000+), 2.7L head, engine management, etc, it gets expensive for a car that is driven maybe 5 times a year.

The engine that he is picking up is pretty much ready to drop in....it's been sitting for a while (car was totaled, kept the engine for a new project but never did it), so we are looking at doing a complete reseal, and at well under $3000 cost of engine, reseal and installation, it's way more cost effective....and he will have the advantage of a spare engine.
