stock engine output limit

What are everyone's opinions on what a stock Turbo s engine can handle in whp? I want to turn up the boost and have a bunch of fancy HP parts under the hood but still have stock internals.

rick13 04-13-2013 02:35 PM

You should be able to run 275-300hp for many miles without too much cause for concern. Watch for lean conditions.

wayde1985 04-13-2013 03:53 PM

Whp or at the flywheel? When running properly i should be over 330-340 to the wheels. Imy car was dynod at 333whp at 16lbs with the stock Turbo and now it has a bigger Turbo and is boosting at 18lbs. It needs to be returned because the PO did mods after the mechanic built the car and probably tried to tune it himself. Its running pretty rich and I don't really know how to use the software to tune it that well. You are referring to a stock Turbo S and not a non s right?

Wayde:

Recommend Rogue Engineering's 951 MAF setup which will greatly improve response and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator set at 40-48psi when needed, High volume fuel pump Bosch Motorsports 040.

I have seen +400hp to the ground with the correct cooling mods and Fuel management tuning.
Would not trust anything past ~350whp on OEM AFM Sensor.....MAF or MAP beyond that....

Opps! Forgot to include a modified Intercooler Stage 1 and Pipes...

Need greater air density and maximum flow.

Oh the car is built. It just has stock internals. I have a wolf3d ems on it. And pretty much every bolt on.

wayde1985 04-13-2013 05:47 PM

Here are the mods. I definitely have the flow but I have a stock inter cooler.

Engine

Precision billet 55mm Turbo (dbb, t62, kkk #8 hot side)
Seimens 55# injectors
Custom 2.5inch inter cooler piping
Custom 3inch intake tube
Adjustable fpr
Synapse bov
Wolf3d v400 ems
Electric boost control sillinoid
Tial 46mm waste gate
3inch down pipe
High flow cat
Lindsey 4inch exhaust
Lindsey steam vent kit
Vented hood
Magnacore plug wires

And a b&b header

List Looks almost perfect, however it could use a little more help....

Definetly recommend a Hotter coil like Nology M70 with 55k Volts -Vs- Bosch oem 31K ( 77% increase in spark energy)
Modified Intercooler Lindsey Stage 1 of more and Stage 2 Headwork.eventually a custom Intake or extrude honed.

Your currently at ~350whp or 410 FWHP 17.3% Parasitic Drivetraine loss (STD)

But with the above added work 18% more denser air flow thats another 63hp or

Imagine +18% more flow 484FWp or 400whp

Thats even more real power.... all from a 2.5l 8v turbo engine...

I like that, Later...

With stock internals (they are pretty stout)...the limit would probably...and eventually be governed by the head gasket and oil pressure. Many of us could run 350-400hp (18psi scares me). It is just a question of how many reliable miles do you want?

O-ring the head, turn the boost up to 24-28 psi. Nowww... we might have stock internal problems.

If your car was dyno'd at 333whp at 16lbs and a stock turbo I will personally ship my car from Australia to that dyno to get a crazy figure for laugh's sake. Sorry, but that's not realistic. Even though you have listed larger IC pipes and exhaust, I take it that is a stock intercooler, throttle body, inlet, head and headers. They're all pretty big bottle necks too. Having said that, numbers are mostly a waste of time. Dyno's are good for tuning with different parts added to the car. That's all.

wayde1985 04-18-2013 04:56 AM

Did you not read the large list of after market parts on the engine?

wayde1985 04-18-2013 04:58 AM

It has a b&b header. Look at my garage if you want to look at pictures of the car

wayde1985 04-18-2013 05:32 AM

Also, its a Turbo S, not a regular Turbo.

wayde1985 04-18-2013 05:37 AM

The dyno numbers have been a bit confusing. The guy that built the car, bob Boyer (west coast distributed of the wolf3d ems) said the Turbo was stock when he dyno tuned the car and the bigger Turbo was added after by the previous owner.. I looked at the sheet on his computer and torque + HP numbers were right around the same number. Once I get a bigger interrcooler I'm going to crank up the boost a bit more. Its at 18lbs now but I want 400whp so we'll see what it takes. I will try to copy the mod list for you that the PO made for me.

I recently was hearing about the Ford RS200 rally car. Had a 2 liter turbocharged 4 banger putting out 600 horsepower. I think the car weighted under 2000lbs too! Good lord...

Anyway, they say that after 10 hours of full throttle, the entire engine was TOAST and a whole new engine needed to be installed. They didn't say rebuilt...replaced.

Yes, sure did. Even if you’re saying that you had all those components on your list EXCEPT an old stock turbo, it’s not enough to get you those hp figures at the wheels. I would have thought that in fact when you changed to the new turbo, you probably got some of the upgrades at the same time? Or were you running all those mods on your list with the old stock turbo?
With all due respect your list isn't huge. You've basically opened up some of the restrictions with your exhaust and have an after market ECU. The ECU can get you a better tune but it doesn't overcome the bottleneck that your I/C, throttle-body, intake, head, headers, stock fpr (if you still have that?).
The stock car developed 250bhp at 14psi. This is approximately 210whp. With only 2 extra psi you are not going to gain 123whp with the stock turbo. Not going to happen. To give you an example. I had a bigger list than yours and a GT3076 turbo. On a realistic dyno it produced 353whp at 24psi with E85, ie LOTS of timing. What fuel were you running at this 333whp pull?
