test tube on cross over pipe

I have an 87 turbo. Been working on it for a while.
The exhaust header had to be welded due to a crack.
Now the test tube on the cross over pipe is leaking.
I see steam/smoke come out of it after a couple of minutes of operation.
I re-tightened the fitting and I am afraid of breaking it.

I removed the test tube and retaining nut a while back while changing the exhaust gaskets. I don't recall seeing any sealing ring.

can the test tube be replaced with a metal cap similar to those used on refrigeration equipment? is a sealing ring required?
I looked at the diagrams on line and can't find a clear picture of it and parts.
I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you
Raul

A spare lug nut works to seal the cap.

TechnoDuck,
Thank you for your reply. Did you use any washer inside the lugnut to make it seal?
Did it last?
Thank you

I tried the lug nut and worked great!
The car sounded much better for a few days but the valve noise has come back. Someone mentioned a check valve for the oil passage in the head may be clogged. Do you know where it is located? the part number to replace it?
The valves were very loud today. I added "sea foam" to the oil but no changes yet.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

The oil valve for the cam tower can be seen under the left most valve spring, It will look slightly different on your car.. in my picture is an '89 cylinder head which has a slightly different, removable valve.

Your '87 will have the multi-piece style valve which is basically a ball, spring and cap pressed into the cylinder head. I do not know the part number for the multi-piece style valve. I do not think it is common to replace it, even after having the cylinder head rebuilt.

Typically if you are not getting oil to the cam tower, you will get a very loud and distinctive clacking sound from the collapsed lifters. Is this what your experiencing?

Technoduck,
Thank you for your reply. The valve noise went away for a few days. The engine run smooth for that time and now the noise has come back. Loud clacking sound describes it accurately.
Can the check valve be changed from above the engine head? or does the head need to come out? Could the lifters be damaged due to lack of oil?
Thank you for any advice you can share.
