Turn signal issue

The turn signals in my 86 951 don’t work when the car is running. They stay on solid when it is off, if the stalk is one way or the other, but even then don’t blink. Hazard lights work completely as they should though. I’ve gone through the connections and replaced the turn signal relay. Nothing has helped.

Also noticed a comment in another thread that this MAY be related to the buzzer relay. There’s a Warning Buzzer relay in spot G8 in my car, but there are no earring lights or buzzers if lights left on, turn signals on, or seatbelt out. Could this be related to the turn signals not working?

The turn signal will stay on solid when the turn signal is left or right. Porsche made it that way. I don't see where the warning relay in G8 can cause this issue. I pulled the warning relay on my 86 turbo and the turn signals work properly.

Have you had the steering wheel off or the plug under the dash for the wheel connector? Is this coincidental with something else you were doing on the car?

Yes. Steering wheel has been off. I bought the car a few months ago, but signals haven’t worked since before 2017. It had an aftermarket wheel on it when I bought it, which I replaced with a new Momo.

Sounds like either an improperly installed steering wheel in the cluster or a bad turn signal cluster.
I would bet on the cluster being defective or the connectors on the back of the steering shaft being loose of falling off.

I’ve spent plenty of time staring at the underside of this dash. Checked the pig tails from the turn signal lever and dash light knob. These seem to be ok... lined up and connections are tight. Also, from a thread by the PO, he changed out the signal lever In his efforts to fix this issue.

Can you be more specific about how the steering wheel or clusters would have been incorrectly installed? I’m not understanding the terminology and not sure what I would look for here?

it's easy to get the wheel wrong. First find the point (wheel off) where turning the shaft will trip the turn signal off. Alternate both left and right and find the center between the two. You may have to do it with the wheel on the shaft but not secured so it comes off easily. There's a small white nylon nub in a slot on the face of the switch cluster that is the actual trigger mechanism. It should move in the slot it's in when the wheel is turned back to neutral. If it doesn't reset then you may have a defective cluster. I found it easier to do this with the cluster off but that's a pain as well. Another easy approach is to put the front up on jackstands to clear the wheels so the steering isn't hard with the power steering running.

Steering-wheel turn-signal switch is fine. Fact that turn-signals turn on at all when clicked for left or right turn shows switch is working OK. If they don't turn OFF when you turn wheel, then yes, clock/canceling may be off. Not cause of your issue in this case. Problem is not that they don't turn off, but that they don't blink at all.

Problem is power-line going to flasher relay-circuit. It signals relay to flash turn-signals or turn them on full-time:

power ON + turn signal = flashing lights
power OFF + turn signal = steady ON parking lights

Problem solved! Knock on wood. Due to an issue with the windows that came up, I started wiggling wires under the dash, and found an issue in the underside of the fuse box. Pulled it apart, and did some rewiring. Long story short, this fixed both the window issue and the signals started working.

Incidentally, this pig tail is pretty brittle. If anyone has a spare, I’d be interested in a replacement.

You can extract individual terminals from that block and replace them. Unfortunately, crispy cracked wiring is of equal concern.

Yeah... there were a couple of bad wires in there that I addressed. My concern is the plastic housingfor this plug which is really brittle. Is there a place to buy a new one?

you can probably order a new plug if you can find the part number. to find the part number go to the "Porsche 951 (944 turbo) reference list" here and follow the new link for the official Porsche PET available online directly from Porsche:
