ran then died --- no start - no spark
well.... another sad 'wont start' thread.
read through a lot of similar threads. got a lot of suggestions from knowledgeable 951 folks. got this car as a project. spent the last several months finishing the installation of a refreshed engine. replace/upgraded everything. got it running a few weeks ago first try, surprised the heck out of me. after finishing a few minor items, took for it's first drive. initially slow, city driving. got to where I could try to give it some gas. easy in 1st, into 2nd and start to feed the gas. car started picking up, felt boost come on and saw almost 5lb on the boost gauge then ...nothing just like flipping a switch. car will crank like crazy, new battery. got it back to the shop and started looking around. suspecting something pulled loose since I had just gotten it running. so far I have: pulled and had DME tested in another car verify power to the DME jumper DME relay verify fuel pump running, new pump, hoses, filter. replace reference/speed sensors. (tac in car inop). used snap-on O scope to verify senors. even verified pulses at the connector to the DME. saw tooth for speed and the TDC pulse on the reference sensor. used Clark's garage process to bypass alarm. looked over every thing. pull dist cap to verify rotor button good. new rotor, dist, wires, coil. verify 12v to coil verify cam turns. when I put a test plug on a wire and ground, never see any spark. when cranking I can smell some gas. had tried spraying some gas in the AFM but not a burp. out of ideas to check. will be reading through the 'no start' threads some more but will appreciate any ideas. I will not flame you for simple suggestions. this is my first 951 build, but had done work on 944 before. but definitely no 944/951 expert. but learning way more than I had expected. seems everything I check/test looks good. for reference and since we all like pictures. what I got. and when I took out for the drive. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404245094.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404245124.jpg |
Sorry you are going through this after your refresh... Nice car.
Do you have "slight" tach bounce when cranking? Like a 16th of an inch. Timing belt okay? I've seen some individuals have issues with the ignition / starter wiring which caused a no start condition. |
tac inop, so no bounce. that is why I borrowed an O scope. speed sensor generates nice saw tooth and reference TDC hits. verified both at the DME plug.
any idea how to confirm if a starter switch? |
Here is a no-start thread that sounds similar to your scenario that was fixed by replacing the ignition switch -

considered a possibility. but when key turned on, all dash lights, PW, etc all seem to work.
thanks, but now need to find how to test. |
Agree... if you find out post it up.
It seems the poster in the other thread ruled out just about everything else... |
ITS ALIVE
bad coil. probably should have commented that I had only verified 12V to both coil leads. could not find my test light last weekend. found it yesterday and verified the NEW coil was bad. going for a nice, long drive this morning. hoping I make it home. LOL check to be sure I have my AAA card with me. |
Nice! Thanks for reporting back. Enjoy the drive!!

Recommend MSD Blaster 2 coil upgrade...increase spark by 30%.
