Standalones (trying not to beat a dead horse)
Who runs em?

not on a 944, but I run a Pantera Motorsports (also branded by 034 Motorsports) stand alone in an EFI converted 356. We had them build a terminated wire harness. For about the cost of the harness you can buy the tools, connectors, and mat'l to build your own harness. The biggest selling points for me on this unit was that it uses a very fast processor, which in turn allows sequential injection and distributorless ignition with only a crank sensor. I also like the way it handles altitude compensation real time.
The competition (that I've seen) all required a cam sensor (which the 944 has). Two big questions to consider are "Whats your budget?" and "Whats your confidence level in putting the project together and tuning it?" From there you can shop either parts or install / tuner shops. Take a look at the forums on efi101.com for more background info.

Been chatting with a known Link g4 dealer about the storm unit + knock + cam sensor + sequential ignition.
Also looking at Injector Dynamic 1000's. Ultimately hung up on the harness. The dealer had a death in the family. Ive been waiting for a few months with no production start date in site. Probably could have finished my own by now but not exactly sure if that's the case. Wondering how awful wiring a standalone into a 944 would be. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk

Talk to Vic at Pauer Tuning. He does standalone stuff, specializing in the 951.
Nize also has been using a standalone in his car for years. Look at the sticky post at the top of this forum for more information.

I've been dealing with Vic and his expertise on the subject is phenomenal but he has family to attend to now after his father in law passed away.

I run a Link G4+ on my 930.... A-MAZING ECU!!!! Great Support from Neil Harvey at Performance Developments, and Link (they are in New Zealand, but that have a local CA number, and due to the time difference, they are open at 430 PM each day Eastern Time Zone and well into the night)....

I spoke with Neil as well (July?)and he actually wanted to help cater the sale back to Vic in every way once I let him know Vic had started helping me originally. Which is fantastic (respectable) while it is taking longer to get the g4 system, it has put a LOT OF respect for the guys I've dealt with.
