Update...

Hi guys,
Seems that I'm in much the same boat as Clark right now - somewhat shy of the funds necessary to complete the project the way I want to. This is complicated by the fact that my project list just grew considerably with the purchase of a 33' Chris Craft. One of those deals that I really didn't need to do, but couldn't pass up... So now everthing moves at half-speed! My original goal for the car was Christmas, but that was going to be "just" a stock rebuild...(no - 250 hp is NOT enough...right Clark?). So I've been accumulating parts a little at a time. I've pretty much reserved myself to the fact that I won't be happy if I don't do the 2.8 stroker while it is all over my garage anyway. I'm still looking for a reasonably priced 3.0 crankshaft before I commit to purchasing the other parts. I have considered the Huntley 2.8's, but I think the stroker is more what I want. Besides, I'm awful stubborn about doing it myself... I may sell the boat after some refitting this winter and that should free up enough money to make me downright dangerous! There is just so much you can do with a 944T that it is sometimes difficult to draw a clear line to define the extent of the modifications. My plan is to start with the basic long block, using the original turbo and intake setup for a while and then build up from there over time. Like I said - that's the plan..........now, how about a twin turbo 928 S4 five speed?? Well......maybe in a few years......Charlie.

I'm also currently building a 2.8l turbo engine with a 88mm crank, 100mm bore and standard - but modified - pistons. What I need is a source for special rods. They must be shorter to compensate the crank and they must also fit into the room around the main bearing saddles.
Could anybody help me with supplier-names or with any other tip for that conversion ?
Thx a lot,
Tom

Connecting rods

Tom,
I believe you can obtain the rods from Pauter Machine or Carrillo for starters. By now, they are probably off-the-shelf parts. If I'm not mistaken, Lindsey Racing (www.lindseyracing.com) has them available. Dave Lindsey has been very helpful in answering my questions. Also check Carrillo Industries at www.carrilloind.com. There are probably many others - I'll pass them along if I see any. Good luck with the project.....Charlie

update: i emailed u.s. chrome about their nicom plating, and this was their response:

Thanks for your interest in US Chrome. Yes, we can completely recondition your 4-cylinder Porsche block, with a one-year warranty. The repair cost is $650 to re-plate all 4 cylinder bores; turnaround time is 2 weeks or less in the shop. The block should be packaged carefully and shipped to US Chrome, 650 Oak Park Ave., Fond du Lac, WI 54935. Please send along one new piston (we dont need the rings), which we will use to measure your piston clearances.
Out tollfree phone # is 866-922-5066 if you have any other questions.
Sincerely;
Scott Reath/Plant Manager

edit: me: Thanks for the quote. Does that price include boring, or just the Nicom plating?

Scott: no, the boring on a 944 block is an additional $100, so the total would be $750.

anyone out there done this, or know of someone who has? brian?
