turbocharger to engine mounting bolt removal

I'm down to ONE bolt that I've spent the entire day trying to remove and it's keeping me from removing the turbo. It's the 13mm (M8) bolt that mounts the turbo and the down pipe to the engine block. I've used every socket set, both 1/4 and 3/8 drive, combination wrenches and even bought a 1/2" offset box end wrench that I was sure was the answer. I can't get any of them to hook up with the bolt.

Have any of you Turbo guys out there found the secret to getting this thing out? I don't care if I have to buy another tool as long as I know which one solves the problem.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I used a swivel socket -

Sears.com

I struggled some but luckily broke it loose pretty easy. I soaked it with liquid wrench too.

Needless to say I didn't reinstall it when I put the turbo and downpipe back in...

Didn't you read my write up? I show in there what I used on the more difficult bolts.

This is the one I warned you about...

Okay, here we go: The great fix it/upgrade thread

Actually, I did read your posting with great interest and used most of the tools recommended. This one particular bolt (unless I missed it) wasn't addressed in the posting. The flange on the down pipe has a raised edge that prevents movement or access from a combination, offset box-end or open-end wrench. The down pipe doesn't allow access of sockets either. So far, nothing I have in my tools inventory seems to give me access to the mounting bolt.

Now that looks like a winner! Outstanding!! I'm hoping the local store has one. Phoning now.

Ha! They have it. I'm outta here!

YOU ARE THE MAN!! That socket from Sears was the answer. I finally got the turbo out and shipped off to the rebuild shop (Evergreen). I am now, as I write, celebrating with a couple of Fat Tire Belgian Ales.
