83' 944 wont start with new relay
Hi ya'll,
I recently picked up a 1983 944 and im loving it! The only things im not loving so much are the electrical issues. Originally I thought the car just had a bad relay as it would turn but not fire. I went and bought a brand new relay but that didnt seem to fix the problem; the car turns but does not start. The fuel pump has also been replaced with an OEM Bosch pump and new OEM spark plugs. I also have pressure in my fuel rail if that helps. My speedometer does not work and neither does my fuel gauge. I went to Clark's garage and followed his repair procedures; 1. Checked the position and speed ref sensors - they appear to be working 2. Tested the relay - its working I tried to short pin 87, 87b, 30 and the car started up. I drove it around and it seems to have no other major issues. To recap, my car works when i manually short out pin 87,87b,30 but does not start when I put in a brand new relay. anyone have any ideas? Sounds like the ignition switch malfunctioned. Easy to replace and cheap.

It's not unusual to get a bad relay. I suggest buying a couple more (one for now and a backup). Buy them from PP because they're the latest version.

Quite unlikely, considering the OP description of the symptom. Either a bad DME relay or a bad DME ECU.
