My new 1987.5 Porsche 944 turbo... questions

Guys,

I recently picked up a 1987.5 Porsche 944 Turbo with 75K original miles and original paint. The car sat for quite sometime and now I am going through it with my mechanic and conducting some pretty severe maintenance just to make it 100% again. The car started with a new battery, new fuel, new fuel filter, with a fresh oil change. Now we're tearing it apart to do a full timing belt job with the water pump all the front engine seals, the cam tower gaskets/seals, the power steering pump (as it doesn't work), radiator hoses, distributor, plugs, cap, wires.

My questions are as follows:
1. Apparently the car is chipped. How do I find out exactly which chip is on it?
2. We're taking out the injectors to send them away to get cleaned. Considering the car is chipped, has a K&N drop in filter in the stock box, has an exhaust, and a manual boost adjustment controller - would this be a good time to instead upgrade to larger injectors and a bigger fuel pressure regulator? If I am taring it all apart, maybe this is a good time to do some performance ads as well?

I have looked on Lindsay racing and it appears that the 300rwhp kit comes with the exhaust (which I already have), a chip (which I have some sort of...), dual port wastage, boost controller, and a 3 bar fuel pressure regulator... seems like I am not too far.

Look forward to hearing.

Thanks,
Paul

Lindsey Racing is a great resource

first, I cannot say enough good things about Lindsey Racing. I leaned heavily on them for advice when I got an 86 944 turbo 'project'. give them a call.

in my case had a rebuilt long block installed and all the other stuff was in boxes.

got the car to build for DE/track and street.

I got a lot of upgrades from LR. chip, 3" exh, dual port WG, boost controler, and all new hoses, vac lines, sent injectors to clean, etc.

I did not upgrade to larger injectors but did upgrade to a 3bar FPR to match the chip mapping. my goal was 300hp. want it to be OK on the street and for longer term reliability.

I think if you have a chip with static maps, you need to have your injector size matched to the chip. of course, some people go to full, tuneable systems so they can alter the maps as needed and use larger injectors. but from everything I have seen, you only need to go that path if you plan to go >300hp.

just got this car on the road this spring and have reached the point of having the engine rebuild broken in, and have run at two DEs. now planning to start raising my boost.

do you have a secondary boost gauge and wideband O2 and Air/Fuel ratio gauge? if not I would suggest you do.

you really want to know what boost level and AFR you see under full boost. especially if you start to crank it up.

I am considering taking the car to a local shop for dyno time. I am planning to raise the boost to a max of 1bar (14lb) and my chip is supposed to be good to that level. if I do this on a dyno and see the AFR get too lean, would need to consider an adjustable FPR.

you would have to open the DME to see what is on the chips.

good luck on the refresh and enjoy.

Lindsey is kit selling company for people with more money then well. you get the drift. Allot of the parts they use are universal high quality turbo parts (waste gates/BOV) The more you dig into the car, the more you'll realize if you want to go wild with it, you can piece it together cheaper. With that said without a turbo upgrade injectors are not likely to be a limit part.

The only thing that's getting you 300hp on their kit is the boost controller. Which is really not a good way to do it, but they sell allot of them.

Order the Lindsey racing M-tune kit.. It will replace the tired injectors, get rid of the barn door air flow meter, and get you up to date software, and you don't have to worry about the old chips either. You already have the exhaust, so at that point you are only a turbo and wastegate away from the limit of the stock internals.

This winter I did the M-tune and a Lindsey Super 61 turbo, and I can't describe enough how much it woke the car up, and how happy I have been with the service I've gotten form Lindsey over the years.
