86 Turbo engine rebuild
Hi there, let me first introduce myself. I'm from Montreal Canada and recently bought a very clean 1986 Burgundy 951 with sport seats, LSD transmission and BBS RS wheels.
![]() Paint and body are in excellent shape and car ran perfectly but some service record where missing. Timing belt, balance belt and water pump where done 4 years ago. Engine was leaking from allover the place so i decided to reseal of the engine. I pulled the engine and dissembled it to the block. Everything was in good shape and other than 2 studs on the wastegate, nothing broke. ![]() Question, what gasket set do i need to order from pelican? from reading on the forum, looks like the Widefire gasket is unnecessary unless i o ring the head, which is not going to happen now. Does the Head gasket set and pan gasket set have everything needed ? What else, other than the clutch should i change "while i'm in there" considering i do have a budget. I checked the #2 rod bearing and it looks like new... ![]() Also, i found this in my oil pan, any idea what it could be ? looks like maybe part of a valve guide... ![]() Thanks. I'd recommend replacing the clutch fork bearings, Pilot shaft bearings in the flywheel end of the crankshaft, spring plate clutch if it's still rubber, all vacuum lines, hoses and a careful and methodical replacement of the oil pan gasket. Also check the oil pickup tube for cracks. I don't recognize that broken piece but I can't imagine how a valve guide piece could get all the way down there. If a lot of this rhetorical, please disregard.

I think i have found the source of the part in the oil pan...turbo bearing. I was going to rebuild the turbo anyway.

I recommend using the Cometic MLS - multi-layer steel head-gasket. A lot more durable than either of the factory paper gaskets. This type of gasket is used pretty much by most current OEM engines from Toyota, Honda, etc. Make sure your head and block deck are flat to within 0.10mm. AR - average roughness of surfaces should be 80 or smoother. Otherwise the scratches can provide a channel for coolant and oil to creep under the gasket. You may not think of it now, but you WILL be upgrading it and turning up boost later. Might as well build a more durable engine than the factory motor for as much reliability as possible. ![]() I will consider a MLS gasket but i don't mind keeping the original one for now so it acts like a fuse...once the car is back up, the next step is Megasquirting. I just rebuild my turbo and i was also looking for the reseal kit you pictured but after some research, I found out it's not the best option for many reasons ( bad sealing kit from china, turbo might need some machining) . I'm also in mtl area and i sent my turbo to Turboexpert inQuebec city there are the pros in the procvince! the had to machine mine and oversized a few parts. I must admit it was a bit expensive but i can sleep at night!!!haha |

Nice to know. I will disassemble it and very what it looks like. the turbine did not touch the housing and the is very little shaft play. Probably the broken bearing is from a previous turbo failure as the engine would have been blowing some serious smoke with a broken bearing like that.
Still no answer on the gasket kits content...looks like it's a secret. |

The gasket for your whole engine are in two parts: block engine gasket set 944-100-901-03 and head gasket set 951-100-901-00. You should have everything you need in there, just make sure you select the right year and model(turbo!)
