Lowering Engine temperature
I'm looking for input. I know with water cooled engines, sometimes removing the thermostat,or reducing the thermostat operating temp lowers overall engine temperature. (No heat in winter) I want to do that with my 993. Does anyone have any experience with that. I have tried to buy lower temp thermostats, but they don't make them, according to everyone. I have purchased for my Jeep lower thermostats. Heat kills. I did it with an Opel , and feel strongly that the extra 100,000 miles I got on the car directly related to the lower engine temps, and still got 30 mpg.

You DO realize that it's air cooled!!?? There is no thermostat.

There is a temp control valve for oil circulation to the front radiator as part of the oil tank.
Oil/coolant temp is not engine temp, but fluid temp. Oil is designed to run at a temp range. If you succeed in lowering temp, then oil lubrication may be effected. Drop trays and air cooling is improved. |
There is a thermostat, but it's for oil temperature, signals when to send oil to the front oil cooler.

There are actually 2 t-stats
1 for the oil is located in the oil filter console beneath the oil tank, #16 and the other is for the fan in the right front wheel well that moves air through the cooler. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1530450464.jpg The t-stat operating temp is determined by a phase change of a wax like material, I'd need to look it up but it's ~180F. There are no options here. Stock the oil coolers work fine for most street use. you can get a lower temp fan switch to turn the cooling fans on earlier (or jumper ir to run when the car is on). You want the oil temperature above a certain temperature before sending it to the front cooler or you risk blowing out the oil cooler with too much pressure from thick oil.
