Hi all,
I just got my hand on a 1996 993 C2 with 120k miles on the engine 2 weeks ago. Everything was working fine initially but I started to encounter moments when after I shifted my gears, I would tried to give more gas. At the moment, the engine would rev up but the car is not really accelerating. At first I thought its related to operation temp, so I tried again today and the same thing happened twice today. Everything is smooth when I drive with ease (easy on gas, shift gear around 3k rpm), but once I want to drive harder the same thing happen. I suspect either the clutch started to slip (no record of clutch replacement, so it is very likely), or maybe the rear main seal is leaking oil into the clutch causing slipping (how to check?). I did a stall test on flat surface by releasing the clutch without giving gas while gear is engaged, and this does stalled the engine. Any suggestion on what should I check? Regards, Matthew |

You can crawl under the car, or get it on a lift, to check for lots of oil around the bellhousing area, the joint between the engine and transmission cases. Whether the clutch is slipping due to age/wear or the rear main seal is leaking oil onto the clutch assembly, the repair is the same: remove transmission and replace clutch disc/pressure plate.

Clutch slips on 3rd gear when you floor the gas pedal?
Classic worn clutch. You can drive it easy on gas while gathering parts. |
