993 Clutch and DMF issues?

I'm shopping for a '95-'96 993 and have driven a few already. Several people have warned me about the DMF issue. What are the symptoms? The '95 I drove yesterday had 49k miles on her and the clutch pedal felt pretty stiff. It also tended to pop up another notch after I released it. The car had some very subtle ticking at idle and I could not find where it was coming from. I had just worked at a PCA tech session earlier in the day and was around several other 993's that didn't have this sound. I took her to 100mph in third gear and noticed no slipping or strange behavior. But I'd like to know how to diagnose a worn clutch/DMF. Thanks.

look here for the hanging clutch pedal fix, which sounds like the above car may need. some also have a corrosion problem on the trans. input shaft that causes stiff clutch actuation. from what i have read, 993 clutches last anywhere from 50-100,000 miles. my car has a very slight tick to it too. i've read some instances of failed/collapsed lifters. max

I'm not aware that there's a DMF issue with 993s. I think 993 DMFs that fail are fairly uncommon. Assuming that mine is bad, I guess that makes my car special. Still, it's way faster than your dog Carrera.

Faster than my Carrera? That may be true, but how would YOU know? I sure drive my Carrera faster than you drive your 993.

On the street, sure...

I thought that would get your attention. Other than my suspected DMF issue, have you heard of any other 993s with failed DMFs?

Yes. Both Ralf B. Tom T. told me they replaced theirs very early on and got the lightweight fw with the rs clutch.

But did they replace the flywheel because it was bad or some oter reason (perf. enhancement, while they were replacing the clutch, etc.)? Ralf is an auto-xer and does DEs. Don't know about Tom.

I'd like to know if there's potentially a DMF design or manufacturing quality problem like the 964 guys experienced between 1990 and 1992.

It's amazing how this works. Everyone who's selling a 993 with 50k-60k miles on it tells me the clutch and flywheel feel fine and that the 993's didn't have the same dmf issues as the 964's, yada, yada. Then the guys who will never ever sell their 993's tell me the dmf sucks and its faliure is just a matter of when, not if.
