Buying a 993 Questions
Hello,
I'm thinking about buying a 993. I've read that the later models are better than the early ones. Chatting with a freind today he mentioned outrageous service costs? Is this so? And if, how outrageous? Thanks! Regards, 2.0 |

Hm, service costs seem to be reasonable to me. The oil changes are extremely more involved though. Like all other 911s they are pretty sturdy and shouldn't need much in the ways of service other than the usual maintenance.
Regarding early vs. late models. 95s are OBD1 and in some ways easier to modify than the later models. However you do not get Varioram in these models (approx 12 less hp). Also 18" wheels were not yet approved on 95 models. Supposedly the 95 models have more of a kick in the acceleration, due to the smoothness afforded by the Varioram system of the later cars, making them "feel" faster. Bad wiring harnesses also plagued this model year. The wiring harnesses should be taken care of by the factory recall though. 96 was the first year for Varioram. Some early builds need the wiring harness replacement as well (covered by the recall). If you are performance minded I would consider a 97 or 98 since the 96 chip is not as easilly programmable as the later years. I believe all coupes in 98 were only offered in the "S" widebody version.
