993 dies then re starts while going 65 mph

First time happening. Driving 65-70 mph when then engine dies ( tach goes to zero) then starts up again. Did this about five times then ran fine for the last hour of my drive. I carry a spare DME relay and swapped it out. I don’t know if a relay would cause this issue. Any advice would be welcome and appreciated. It’s a 96 993 c4 with 58,000 miles if that makes any difference.

Dose it die under load /throttle or when lifting / clutch / shifting, or both?

May get a wider audience on Rennlist 993 forum.

DME seems to die once, not start to go "bad". Fuel (quality of gas, filter, pump) or ignition (DME, ground, loose or chaffed wire harness, etc) are the obvious gremlins.

Engine Wiring harness aging out / causing fires can be a problem as these cars age. The age / heat damage brittle nature of a 25+ year old engine harness can become a growing problem. Most electrical components fail and don't return, unless it is temp/heat/expansion related.

Thanks for the input. I swapped out the DME relay and drove the 130 miles home with no issues. Hoping that was it. It was very disconcerting. The first 30 miles had me on edge. Going 70 mph and suddenly tach drops to zero then two seconds later returns to 3000 rpm is so strange!!
It would die while cruising at 65-70 mph. Then fire back up within seconds.

Confident of not getting stranded is understandable.

Hopefully that was it then, usually they die and don't come back. since you pulled the DME, if you still have it, pop off the plastic cover for a visual inspection, it may show signs of failing (burn marks, etc) which will go along way to reassure you it was the problem.
