Has anyone done the split grill upgrade?

I've always liked the retractable spoilers on the 993 C2S and C4S. It's got that cool split, which just adds a subtle touch. Some guy on Rennlist just picked up a '95 C2 non-S with this split grill option. Check out the third from last photo below.

Looks like it ain't cheap - like $350 for the kit from Gert and then I'd have to paint it and DIY the install. Has anyone here done this and how much fun was the job, how cheap can you do it for?

How many months have passed since RL got his 993? How long was he going to wait to start the mods? Guys, I think we need to get together to have an intervention.

Umm, an intervention????? now that sounds like something we could definately handle.

All we'd have to do to get him there is say we've got a DIY project ...

Richard, there are are little round "nubs" on the grill that fit in to holes of the spoiler frame. It is also held on with adhesive. If you do decide to do this let me know, and I can get the procedure and diagrams for you from the factory manuals. If your rear spoiler wall is starting to crack , or is broken, it may be a good time to change it as well. Max (EDIT)--I just read in another thread that you(might ) have the cd-rom manual.

Guys, I forgot to add that I won't be touching this job until after my self-imposed 3 mos. moratorium on mods has expired - around Labor Day. But I am allowed to do general maint. and repairs, just nothing gratuitous (yet). Accordingly, I'll be DIY'ing my first 993 oil change probably next weekend. After that I'm doing tie rods and rear control arms. Oh, what wonderful fun!

I still think the intervention is in order. Richard has been obsessing about 993 problems (real and imagined) and mods (future - yeah right!). He needs our help and he needs it fast.

Just got my spare fan belt and can of 44k for the trip to NJ this weekend. I'm gonna blow out every spec of carbon before the oil change. My parents are gonna drool over this car. Maybe I can sell the Carrera to my dad.

Hehe. I had an entire interior waiting on my car a year before I got her. At least Richard had the patience to wait till afterward to begin mods.

I dunno Richard. I thought I liked the look of them, then someone (non-porsche) told me they looked like towel racks. Now I just cant see them in any other way then being...well...useful to hang things on.

I'm sure they're useful for reducing lift (not that I've ever bothered to investigate) but you know the clean look of the rear of a 993 is sweet.

Just some random thoughts.

Cheers

Mark, I don't mean a whale tail. I mean the regular, retractable spoiler that comes standard on all non-turbo 993's. It's just that some of the C4S and C2S models have a really cool split in the grill insert. But then I've seen plenty that don't have the split either.

hahaha Richard...I know your not talking about the whale tails...however I did think you were talking about the splitter than runs across the tail from one side to another ...Sorry, should have read the post more carefully.
