Picked up a 94 RS America

The short version is - I bought and sold this car 4 years ago when the timing just wasn't right - and I was able to buy it back (at a premium) last week. Really happy to get it back. It's pretty well sorted for 138k miles. It's had a 8/10 respray with pretty much every rubber piece (except tail trim..get to that in a sec) replaced. Previous owner had the car since 2008 and apparently it was painted prior to his ownership - he was told it was sun faded, which is believable because the seats were faded as well (owner who had the car for the last 4 years DID replace the seats with mint originals, so..whew!).

Anyway, for the tail trim - does anyone know the exact difference between the "original supplier) version and the actual porsche version? Does the non porsche one still have the crest any everything? The price difference is substatial...AND I'm sure many who are offering an original piece out there are actually selling you the repro.

Original supplier:

and another one that is probably carrera but hard to tell - guess it's the same as RSA?

Jeff congrats, it’s a beautiful RSA! It looks to be in great shape already so only the typical 964 refresh and she’s good to go.

I haven’t looked too closely at the RSA wing, does the rubber trim have a Porsche logo on it? If yes I’d bet the repo version will not have any type of Porsche markings on it. If the original doesn’t have markings the primary question is if the fitment is as good on the repo although if its OEM then it likely is.

Post up some more pics when you get a chance….

The OE Supplier link I posted - it looks like the crest is there in the picture. I guess I could always ask Pelican if that's the case or this is just a stock photo.

WOW! Congrats, she's beautiful. And quite frankly, silver is my favorite color on a car. Now, the real question is.. will you keep her this time?

If you need help with the tail trim you can give our salespeople a shout and they should be able to help you track down the right part #.

Thanks! Yes, I don’t see her going anywhere anytime soon!

It’s pretty tough to tell from that picture if there’s a logo. Does your exiting trim piece have a logo?

She really does look like a great example and the fact that you know its history for the last two owners is a plus….. .

Get out and enjoy the car. The more you experience it the more you’ll continue to fall in love with the platform and the engine. They do need some updating and upgrading as you already know but that’s part of the fun….and what makes it your own.

Out of curiosity are you going to sell the blue one or slowly rebuild it?

Yes there's a logo now - I'm not sure I would have known if this was a thing if I hadn't owned one.

It's in really good shape for the miles - amazing, really. I intend to do some deep cleaning and normal improvement/restoration of some areas and will also do some modifications to suspension/wheels..really just things that can be reversed.

The blue one is staying at this point. I'm looking forward to the build still - just wanted an aircooled to drive in the meantime..it will serve as a reference model and a way to set my expectations of the new build The question mark is probably the 3rd car - 2020 GT350R...also just incredible..but the car is done out of the box and I like to tinker. I beleive the value will hold well on that car so I'm not in a huge rush to sell it...but 3 cars is crowind the garage and this blue one is going to be a mess lol.

This was common on all the wings dating back to the original whale tail.

Yes and fun fact..that I didn't think about before. The rear seats also use the same unobtainium black cloth from the front seats...for better or worse!

That just makes the rear seats more unobtainium than the fronts. Sadly so much of this stuff ended up in the trash or sold off cheap. Good luck finding replacements now.

It's cool the way the seats fold, that they don't rest on top of each other, so they don't flatten out the foam. It looks like these have always been folded down because they look factory new 10/10. The fronts, surprisingly are 9.5/10. A small part of me wants to put RS replica seats in the front to preserve the originals...but then what do we have? Probably more likely to get damaged trying to store them as opposed to being correctly installed in the actual car.

Good times!

I am really on the fence with the car, about changing things. I know 100% that I will not do anything that cant be reversed... but I really want to OEM+ some parts and modernize others. I can see a set of E88s, PSS10s, big reds (or blacks), RS uprights and MAYBE a regear happening. Still pondering.

I say enjoy. I have done a lot of modifications to all my cars some are easily returnable to stock others not so much. Even my turbo has some mods but I have all the original parts and can easily convert it back and enough spares to build a few. Preserving the seats is a smart Idea but wrap them up nicely and keep them in a climate controlled room. Those bolsters will wear eventually and someday you will probably appreciate it.

I used the 993 NON-RS uprights. I did sort them with timeserts for caliper bolts and built out the latest hub/bearing setup. You use 993 abs washer and press on the 964 outer wheel.

I did something else non-conventional. I modified the 964 longitudinal to push the control arm out by 8mm. I did this because 993 uprights (rs and non rs) have a slightly different balljoint location, causing the track to be reduced by 8mm when used on a 964. Otherwise, your options are 964long and 993 upright = -8mm. 993 long and 993 upright = +8mm. This situation is why you see most people struggle to get enough camber after a 993 upright swap onto a 964.

Happy to help however I can.
