EZ69 Solution? 964 Turbo Ignition Module
Just wondering if anyone has found a solution to the Ignition Control module? I have been looking for about 6 months now and no luck. We have made the cable before but this is a bit different. Also wonder what the differences in the MB would be as there is no real programming in them, they are physically identical.

I highly doubt an EZ-69 from an M-B would work - as even the EZs for 3.3 and 3.6 motors are not interchangeable - that's my understanding at least.
I think people have switched to standalone ignition (like MSD) when a new EZ wasn't feasible. I'm glad I found a working spare EZ a couple years ago :-)

This would be interesting to see if they work. I have two spares for my 94 I picked up over the years. Porsche gets some crazy money for them rebuilt. Last I checked it was almost $3000 plus $900 core charge. If this works for under $100 that would be an amazing savings.
I have two units that were used by Andial for racing I believe they were used on the 3.3's based on the dates but have a different body with an opening for a chip. I have no idea what the chip did vs the stock units but when I referenced the part numbers online they came up as MB units without any MB markings. let us know

I've been quietly lurking to pounce on one of these should it become available for the last oh odd
24 mos. Everyone I've considered obtaining has been priced in the stratosphere ! Happened to remember to mention it to a close friend who has a shop and who has worked on a number of these cars and he said give him a minute and quickly called me back with a " is this what your looking for "? Real smarty pants like ! Just so happen to have one sitting on the shelf, ... it's on the way to you !!! Haha can't beat that! Bert

If everyone that needs one could submit a parts request at their dealer that would be great. Porsche is starting to re-make old NLA parts and supplier parts after enough request have been submitted. I currently have 2 of these cars sitting in our storage unit waiting on them

Well - IMO - ideally somebody would make a better solution - use the same wiring harness inputs and use an updated ignition computer. My understanding is the EZ has pretty relaxed/safe timing parameters - gains to be had using aftermarket ignition - but you have to tear things apart to install a trigger wheel on the crank etc. Would be nice to have a nice modern (adjustable/programmable?) plug n play ignition computer.
One can wish.....

Part of the reason the C2 Turbo with EZ69 has such conservative ignition numbers was the fact
the fly wheel had only three timing teeth. The teeth where also not symmetrical (one is sized differently)....this lead to not good resolution. If you get a chance to look at the crank sensor output you can see it wander. I used a 62-2 wheel on my front pulley and a XDI-2 when my second EZ-69 died. |

Bumping this thread as my 3.6 turbo is now inop pending location of a replacement (working at almost 30 years old) EZ69.
Come on Porsche Classic. You're letting these cars become relics when you want to help keep them on the road, making your brand look as amazing as it used to be. You can also make a profit getting us some replacement units.

I asked my brother about this. He built a special turbo for me that I wanted to keep emissions legal and continue to use the EZ69. He still writes technical articles for his PCA region but is otherwise retired.
Here is his response. If you have an EZ69 equipped turbo you will gain an understanding on why no one works on these units. -------------------------------------------------- My expert electrical repair shops can NOT repair them.... as Bosch bakes the circuit board assy. in epoxy. I tried my luck at chipping the epoxy away to get to the circuit board. Impossible. Messy, and everything breaks when the epoxy shatters. According to Lonnie Lendezi at PermaTune he also casts his electronics in epoxy to prevent electrical leaks. Something he learned in the Air Force making high altitude fuel quality units. The only fix is a replacement but they are N.L.A. ---------------------------- If your shop can't get your 930 functioning and it's parked.... you need a better resource. You are welcome to contact me privately and I'll give you a resource that should help you get your beast up and running. Last edited by alwaysflat6s; 06-01-2023 at 08:33 PM.. |
