964 Steering Rack Rebuild & Needle Bearing Fitment – Guidance Needed

I’m currently working on my 1991 Porsche 964 Carrera 2 and could use some guidance regarding a steering rack rebuild, specifically the needle bearing fitment. I want to make sure everything is done correctly to avoid premature wear or handling issues.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:
• Removed the steering rack from the car and inspected it thoroughly.
• Cleaned all internal components and checked the housing for wear.
• Found OEM needle bearings (part number X) and also noticed some aftermarket versions from suppliers Y and Z with slightly different dimensions.

My questions are:
1. Which needle bearing spec is correct for a 1991 U.S.-spec Carrera 2?
2. Are there any tips for ensuring the correct pre-load on these bearings during assembly?
3. Has anyone used the aftermarket bearings from Y or Z, and are there any differences in fit or durability compared to OEM?

Additional context:
• Car has ~120,000 miles.
• No prior steering rack rebuilds.
• I plan to replace all seals and lubricate per Porsche spec.

I’d really appreciate any guidance, diagrams, or step-by-step tips from anyone who’s done this before. If anyone has photos of the proper needle bearing setup, that would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,

I overhauled/repaired several racks but never replaced bearings.

I wrote a small pdf document but unfortunately I cant attach it.
I can send it by email if you want.

Regards
Hans
