Location of R61 in a C2?
The weather has turned cold here, and my C2 suddenly won't crank. It's not a battery issue, because when it wants to, the engine will crank any number of times without hesitation and will start just fine. (And the battery is new, in any case).
When the engine won't crank, the dash lights up as normal, but otherwise it is just dead, and I don't hear the starter solenoid "clunk" to engage the pinions with the flywheel. The other clue is that I also don't see the "load shedding" function operate: nothing dims or turns off when the key goes to its "start" position. After troubleshooting, I've concluded the problem must be either the "start" position of the ignition switch, or the Start Relay "R61". However, I've stalled because I cannot locate R61. I've looked in the frunk fuse box, and no relay positions are marked R61, and I cannot find any postings which tell me where R61 is located. Hoping that someone out there can point me at the location of R61 on a C2. As a first step, I want to "hot wire" a button to pulse the starter solenoid's coil directly. Many thanks! ... Gregg |

It's most likey just the electrical portion of the ignition switch. I had to replace mine in my '91 964 years ago because of an intermitent signal being sent to the starter solenoid.

Oh, and there is no starter relay. The starter solenoid acts as the relay.

That’s actually not entirely true. The Tiptronic has an actual relay R61. It prevents the engine from being started if neither P or N are selected. It’s a very simple relay like the horn relay and has a 53 printed on it.
