Oil cooler blower repair - FYI

Haven't been posting much lately. no real need, not really driving my baby much, but today I did fix a problem that cropped up last summer/fall. My oil cooler blower seemed to be on the blink, so before this summers heat wave hit I decided it was time to effect a repair. In talking to the dealer parts guy it seems that the oil cooler thermo switch(my first guess) was not in stock, but the "series resistance block" was and all things being equal (as in I hadn't a clue what was wrong) I took one and made the swap this morning(I can do that, since I'm part of the "new Bush economy" and have lots of spare time) the swap was straight forward, remove right front fender liner, remove small alum. piece on end of cooler enclosure, underneath is the nut that holds the block on, presto chango, reverso and done. maybe an hour to do. I was relived today when the fan came on with the oil temp. gauge square at 9 o'clock. series resistance block P/N 9930616-521-01 $44. By the way does anyone know what this resistance thing does?

It's nice when the first part you change is the one that solves the problem!!

The 993s have a very similar ballast resistor for the oil cooler fan (and the A/C condensor? fan)

I had to take the complete nose-cone (bumper) off to change them on my "S".

I can't give the actual electrical explanation, but; when they fail, the cooling fan will not kick in to hi speed, remaining at low speed. This will show up as higher oil temperature on the gauge, especially in slow traffic.

There is an updated part number for the 993 resistor. It comes with a metal disc that acts as a heat sink that supposedly will help the life of the resistor.

Lot's of 964 and 993 oil cooling info here: http://p-car.com/diy/fan/
