Using a Battery Conditioner

G'Day everyone from Australia,

Could someone advise me if it is ok to use a Battery Conditioner(a small box which trickles in a very low voltage) on my 996. The reason for this is that it may stay idle for up to 3 weeks. Prior to owning this car, the 85 Carrera i owned had an Optima deep cycle battery that would drain itself in under a week. The local auto electrician couldn't find a draining point ,so he adivised me to use a battery conditioner. Would this be necessary with the 996? and can it do any harm to the electrics?-also i would have to leave the hood lid on the first click (the locking device) to allow the wire into the battery.

Thanks for any advice you may have

GDay, also from Aus.
Ive been using a battery conditioner on my 993 now for a year, and it works very well. The only thing I had to do was remove the little light under the bonnett, which went on if it was raised high enough for the wires to pass through, and would have played havoc with the alarm system.
Cheers Lyndon

Thanks Lyndon-The 996 also has a trunk light-did you just pull the globe out or totally disconnect it- ie take the fuse out etc?

Thanks again,

JASON

Just took the bulb out, if its the same as a 993 , the whole fitting just prizes out, but is quite tight. Amazingly the fitting is identical (ie. the same!) to a Ford Falcon boot light!
cheers Lyndon

I have the Porsche battery conditioner where the main thing (transformer) plugs into an outlet. The cable is very skinny and it plugs into the cigarette lighter socket. I just close the door and have the cable in there on the 996.

The reason I got the Porsche charger was that I had to stike a deal with the local dealerchip when my battery died in the 996: They won't charge me for a new battery and in return I buy the Porsche charger (I admit at an inflated price)

I use one when the car is put to bed for the winter. Seems to keep the battery happy

No such hassles in Cali (winter that is) ;)
