What is the easiest way to get to the thermostat?
All,
I am getting a new thermostat on Monday and would like to replace it myself. What is the easiest way to get to the thermostat? How to take off the plastic covers to get to the thermostat? I have 1992 964. Thanks in advance, Alan |
You need to remove the side panels on the right side..make sure you have the new clips because the old ones break. Also if you are replacing the whole thermostat housing ( I posted in your previous post about this; the thermostat insert is available seperately) you will also need the rubber mount for the thermostat and I would definitely change the hoses that go from the oil tank to the thermostat. There are different hoses depending on what the part number of the thermostat is so make sure the right ones are supplied.
Apart from that it's a straight forward job. I'm assuming that you do have both of the Bentley books about this car. |
Thank you very much for the reply.
I ordered the thermostat online before I got your reply. Thank you for the tip on the plastic clips, rubber mount and the hoses from the oil tank to the thermostat. I have only Porsche 911 Enthusiast's Companion: Carrera 2, Carrera 4, and Turbo 1989-1994, which give a very high level of details (to my taste). Which 2 Bentley books are you referring to? Thanks again. Alan |
Adrian's book is one of them, there is also another smaller book. It's on the Bentley website. Good luck changing the whole thermostat. I'd rather remove one circlip and replace the insert rather than disconnect a load of oil lines and change the whole housing which there won't be anything wrong with.
