Car stalls after turning off.

Hello,

My 95 993 has stalled twice in a month time. This is what happens:

I turn off the motor for 1 or 2 minutes and when I try to start it up, it starts and stall ( 3 or 4 times), as if there is no gas. I leave it alone for a couple of minutes and it starts ok.
My thoughts are I am having a problem with the security system.

Any thoughts?

tks

Sounds a bit like heat soak: fuel in the lines is vaporizing, due to excessive heat. This doesn’t happen when the engine is running because the fuel is flowing through the lines quickly enough not to vaporize. But when you shut down, the fuel flow stops and it vaporizes. After some more cooling down or the fuel pump pumping fresh cool fuel, the problem is eliminated.

However, I’ve never heard of this on a 993.

Was your car really really hot when this happened? In hot weather?

The other thing that can happen is that heat can weaken the connections to the battery.

If it were the security system, I don’t think it would start at all.

Hi Kang, no the car was not hot. The gauge was marking a little over half marker.

By the way, in hot weather and under traffic my car temperature marks 3/4 up. Is this too hot or ok for the specific condittions?

A little over halfway is a little on the warm side, in my opinion. Nothing to worry about, though. If this were causing heat soak in your car, something else might be wrong, like somehow excess heat got to the fuel lines or really bad electrical cables or connections. This is a typical reading on a hot day or during aggressive driving (lots of revs). It should be less than half during highway cruising, even on a hot day.

3/4 the way up is pretty hot in my mind. Intermittently, this is OK, but I would be uncomfortable if it stays this hot for very long.

It is normal for the engine to get hotter as you sit in traffic on a hot day. The low speed cooling fan should kick in somewhere around the 3/4 level on the gauge. There is a resistor that has a reputation for going bad that could cause your fan not to turn on. You should read and follow all the troubleshooting information here to make sure your fan is turning on like it is supposed to:

You might also be interested in the fan override switch, shown here:

http://p-car.com/diy/fanswitch/

Flip this switch when you’re sitting in traffic and your gauge will drop like a rock down to the 1/4 level or so.

Possible cause is a bad DME relay with old 944 part number. Cheap new 993 part number one costs only $35 and easy to change. Located in the front compartment un passenger side under a black metal lid where all the relays and main fuses are.
