964 price check
Hi,
I'm looking for a 964 (though I haven't decided between a coupe or cab). What do you think of this ad (of course no pictures...not much detail): "I have for sale a 1990 C2 sunroof coupe Tiptronic 93k miles. Full engine overhaul with new updated pistons & cylinders at 92k miles. Car is immaculate in and out. Rare linen exterior paint with camel leather interior. Looks and drives like new. Must have $24,000. " http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/viewtopic.php?t=3192 I know that the early 964s had problems with out leaks at the cylinder head b/c of lack of head gasket...but why would you need to replace P&Cs at 92K? Also, what color is "linen." Is $24K too much? Couple more thousand and I could probably find a 95 993 right? How about the early tiptronic transmissions, are they reliable? I actually would like an automatic as my commute takes me through gridlock traffic... I'm getting in touch with the owner to check out this car soon...but thought I would check with Pelicans...owners aren't always the best source of information. Chuck

In order to add the head gaskets like the newer 964's, the recommended procedure is to replace the P&C's with a set designed for the gasket, and have the heads machined to accept the gasket.
The tiptronics seem to be very reliable (from posts rennlist), but I agree, $24k sounds a high for 93k mile car........ -Eric 90 C2 NER/PCA |

Having gone through this just recently, but on the other coast, I found that you normally get what you pay for. I nice 964 will run you 24K and up (at least in the Pacific Northwest). I found a lot of cars for 20K that weren't up to my standards. I could not find a 993 under 30K, let alone a nice one. The average price I found 993s was around 33K and up. I've heard stories of the price drop on 993, but I have yet to experience it. My advice, find the nicest car you can and buy the one that feels "right" to you. Don't buy for price, because we are only talking a few grand, by for the car that best fits you. Good luck!

Today I went check out the car I mentioned in the first post. Car appeared to be in excellent condition. Went for a test drive. Driving a 911 with an automatic is a different experience! But I liked the tiptronic, would be a good fit for the driving I do.
The bad news is that I don't fit well in the car, my head hits the roof. I did have this problem in my last car (911e targa) or the 78 SC targa that I had a couple of years ago. Do 964 targas and convertibles have more headroom?

Thanks, I am in the same boat, I drive about 11 miles to work and it takes about an hour and I think it would kill me with a stick. I know your belt ways are terrible, I have spent sometime on them. Michael

Love the tiptronic-especially in manual mode. I have 30 minutes of heavy traffic each way to work and my old 3.2 took a toll on my leg. Also, my wife can drive it without complaining if I need the SUV and it still outruns 98% of cars from a stoplight.
The first tiptronic I drove I kept in D and it seems so slow compared to my 3.2 that I kept the older car for another year. The manual mode changed my mind but it is still slower than the 5-speed. Per this forum it is very reliable transmission. It's not perfect but I love it--along with p.s. and a/c that works. 1991 Tip Colbalt Blue Cab
