Currently looking at 964's... Have some questions!
 

Hey everyone-

I need some purchase advice... I've decided I'm probably going to buy a 964 as my next car, and I've been shopping around a bit and reading the archives to try and get a little more educated on this car.

Anyways, I'm aware of what folks have cited as concerns: Freudenberg <sp> flywheel/clutch issues, oil seepage from the heads, distributor venting, etc. I'm currently looking at a '90 C2 with 27k on it. Owner reports that car does not leak any oil whatsoever, and is still on the original clutch w/o any problems. He had the car checked out recently at his dealer and they said the car needed nothing. Car has a pretty good service history and has apparently been taken very good care of.

My question is this: If I buy one with this low a mileage, am I still at risk of experiencing some expensive problems down the line with leaks and flywheel, or would the major concerns for these cars have been already addressed by now if they were going to rear their ugly head? I'm expecting I might have to pay a little bit of a premium for the condition and mileage, and I don't want to get into a money pit after purchase!

Any relevant advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

The car is from 1990 and has done 27K thats less than 2K a year, if it's not the cabrio I find that rather strange, even for a weekend car.

Advice 2.
Check if:
- All the maintance reports are still there. Check the millage on them
- Invoices
- Original manual etc..
- Check the serialnumber and look in the book of Peter M. to check date and modifiation level.


Advice 3.
This is a MUST>>>
If your not a Porsche mechanic and you are not, have it fully checked (at an official or renowned Porsche garage in your neighbourhood) before you buy it. All hidden problems will appear or hopefully not. Ask on this board where that might be in your area, since I'm from the Netherlands I have'n't got a clue from this in the States.

While its true that most of the early 964’s that were susceptible to the leaky cylinder heads and flywheels have had these problems addressed by this point in their lifecycle this case my be the exception to the rule since there is so little mileage. I would have a PPI for sure. I would also consider one that’s maybe a little more miles but a 92 or later, or one you can confirm has had those problems addressed. I can’t imagine that this one is that inexpensive with such low miles.

This guide has been very helpful. I was recently looking for a good 993 but got hooked on the practicality (and price)of the 996.
