Commuter 911: 993 or 996?
Just got a new job that will require me to drive in bumper to bumper Southern California traffic for about 90 minutes each way. Horrible I know but what can you do.
So since I'll be sacrificing myself through this commute, my wife has given the go ahead for me to purchase any car of my choice to ease the commute pain as long as it's under $40k. So here are my thoughts... 1. I think I'll get a tiptronic for the constant stop and go traffic. 2. I'll need to be confortable (ie., listen to nice radio, great A/C, low road noise) so I think I'll need to get a 993 or 996. So which one would be better as this sort of commute work horse? |

As someone who owns a 993 C4 Cab (6-speed), have you considered neither?
Although the Tippy will help you in stop-n-go traffic, I can't imagine being stuck in B-to-B traffic in a 911 and not being able to open her up. Additionally, this type of driving is going to be very hard on both cars and may lead to premature CELs, clogged SAIs (although the 996 will be better in this regard as Porsche made them nearly twice the diameter), etc. I'd also be careful of overheating the car on those hot S.Cali days with your A/C blarrin'. I'd probably get a different car that is going to be more pampering to you in those conditions. |

For Summer conditions you might consider going water cooled. You can always upgrade to a 3rd row if you notice your temp going above 185.....
