Where do you find your Performance parts?
 

Im in the market for purchasing a 964. I was curious about where everyone gets their performance parts. I've tried google and have only come across small things like shocks, air filters, and well... thats pretty much it. There was a site that had 3.8L pistons and all sorts of other stuff, but seemed like a dead website as i e-mailed them and received no response.

So how bout it? Where can one get cams, chips, intake, pistons, rods, crankshafts, and all that fun stuff that increases performance. Where do you go to get all sorts of power from that 3.6L engine?

Dont worry, im just in the "curious" stage. Chances are, if something broke, i'd replace it with something better... or if i won the lottery.... well, i'd probrably be driving around in a Diablo... (not happening).

I guess nobody uses them... (yeah right!)

Firstly, what are you going to use the car for?, what is your budget? without that information any answers mean nothing.

I would do the suspenion first anyway.

Well okay, the performance parts i always seem to come across are intakes where they modified the airbox cover, computer chips, and exhaust and of course a cam grind. Question is, what about displacement? i've seen some 3.8L pistons and cylinders for the 9.6 engine. They never reply, must be a dead site or something.

So what do I want? Speed basically, and some suspension would be nice too. I just want a car I can keep in the garage that is a total German monster that i can take out every now and then.

My budget? im not looking really at whats in my budget at the moment. Im curious whats out there and whats readily available.

If you don't know what you want and why, what you are going to use the car for and your budget, most suppliers aren't going to be interested.

On the 964 the most important mod is suspension and tires. Personally I would just use the rear mufler by-pass pipe and leave it there for engine mods. And maybe a good, proven chip.

Sorry to but in, where is the best place to get a rear muffler by-pass?

Which performance chip is a proven chip? (Daily driver that need more out of the hole power)

Also it is a Tiptronic.

If Pelican should have it, best thing is to call them, or several other suppilers keep stock. For a Tip car I don't really see the point of a chip.
Most chips focus on better mid range performance, you should call Steve Wong and see what he can do for you.

When I owned a 964 I did a few mods that really woke it up. I went with a primary and cat bypass. I put a K&N cone filter on the car along with a chip matched to my mods. Lastly I put a shot of nitrous on the car. It ran real well for what it was

Loquat, your question is one which we all at one point or another have entertained......first, do you plan on doing the work yourself.....if so, you will come to realize there is alot of info out there from specialized tuners/builders whom can help you put a project together. Andial, Protomotive, Imagine auto, Ruf, Schatz, etc., etc.,

In the end you will realize there are nuances in the assembly process that is better left to the pro's to do, and you wind up better off to let one of these shops take care of your project the right way. I've heard many people get deep into what they thought they can handle only to come out with poor idle/ poor power/somehow getting it all wrong despite quality parts (expensive). In the end much more is spent correcting your efforts than just taking it in to get them done in the first place. Remember....these shops have already been there done that and many have stages with upgrades to higher stages that work well depending on how much you want to spend. The different tuners all have a twist on how they get their HP numbers because they have different ways of obtaining power with different theory on their particular application. You can bolt on only so much with OK power, but if you really want to get into the meat and bones of how to make your car strong with high HP, this requires strong background in thermodynamics/fuel/ignition/powercurves etc., etc.,

I had my top end rebuilt by Walt @ Competition Engineering in 2003. When he was working on my engine, he asked me if I wanted to bore it out to 3.8L. I opted out...for finance reasons.

If you were to do some serious HP, you could start there. Add some RaceWare parts, port and polish work, etc, etc...

Mods I've put in myself; Cup Racing clutch, Secondary muffler bypass.

Mods I'll be adding before summer 06 (X'mas gifts hopefully), Evoms GIAC chip and 100 cell hi-flow cat from www.evoms.com, Biltstein+Eibach from Pelican, and Strut tower brace, RS adjustable bars and a short throw shifter from Schatz http://www.schatzmotorsport.com.

Further down the road, maybe some Big Reds and let's not forget Kumho Victoracers.

The best place for a primary muffler bypass is your local muffler shop. They can cut the muffler out and weld a piece of pipe in place. When I had it done it cost me 65.00. Pretty cost effective......
