Anyone auto-x their Tiptronic cars? Fun or not fun?

Hello. I use to subscribe to this forum in the 90's when I owned a 5spd '94 964. My 964 was totaled in 2000 when a semi dumped its load of lumber in front of me. I survived but broke my left ankle and knee. I haven't owned a P-car since. I've got the bug again but have chronic left knee and ankle problems. I'm considering another 964 but with a TIP and would again like to participate in auto x's and DEs. I really don't think my ankle and knee can put up with a manual anymore.

Does anybody here with a TIP participate in auto x's and DE's regularly? If yes, what specific mods can be made to TIPs to make them perform better?

Thanks for helping an ol' brother out!

This seems to be tip... hard to say for sure, but it looks like fun and he doesn't seem to be shifting.

I autocrossed 4-5 times with my '91 Tip 964 and it worked great! I just put it in 2nd gear and was able to keep my hands on the wheel and focus on driving. Did pretty well if I do say so myself....

Dustin, Sure sounds like he was running over alot of cones. Maybe it's just the poor audio. Yep, that sure looked fun. I'm almost sold.

CCKrause, Are there any mods for the TIPs such as remapped shift points? Have you made any mods to your TIP?

I doubt the guy is hitting many cones, after all He has driving gloves on. Never understood the gloves for a 1 minute race. I guess it is what you get used to.

I don't believe there are any mods for a TIP that have been produced for the masses. The only car that I know of that has any mods done to their TIP is Robert Linton's car. His Tip was "race prepped". His car is full of "one-off" pieces.

In this thread on Rennlist, he was planning on having a LSD made for it.

Best of luck. If you do find someone that does mods for these, let us know.

SpeedyJP, I can't attest to the driver's proficiency (or lack thereof) - I just found the vid on Google Video and recalled your thread...

Either way, it looks like there's plenty of fun to be had in a Porsche with Tippy. Every one I've driven has been a manual, so I can't vouch for the smile factor, but the shifting is just one small facet of these great cars.

Perhaps it's like having a sense that fails and the other senses compensate - maybe you'll enjoy other aspects more now that you won't need to worry about the shifting aspect of the drive.
