Cone Filters??
Hello All,
I had one the the K&N Cone type filters on my 1986 Carrera. It sounded pretty cool with the exhaust system etc. I liked it. I now have a 996 all stock less a Fabspeed muffler system. Question maybe not for me but I am sure it has crossed minds.....ANY benefit noted other than sound and does it affect anything in regards to reliability going to the "cool looking cone"? Drive safely, SW |
Personally, I don’t think there is much benefit besides what you have already described. There is a potential BIG downside, though, and that is contamination of the MAF sensor. MAF sensors have been known to be ruined from the oil on these K&N type reusable filters. A small amount of oil gets drawn in with the air and coats the MAF hot wire. This can lead to all sorts of drivability problems, hesitation, lack of power, failing smog, etc, as the ECU does not get an accurate reading of how much air is getting into the engine.

Would that apply to 964's?

If you want the cool sound, you can drill your airbox. On the 993 you can get a motorsound airbox...I'm not sure if this applies to 964s or 996s. Modified airboxes give that intake sound and keep the stock filter with no downside for NA engines. |
There's no MAF sensor in the 964's though... I've seen many 964's with cone filters and all the GT3's have massive cone filters so it seemed natural to me that cone filters would be a good choice. So the claims of all these advertisers are wrong I guess?

I've heard a few horror stories about particle contaminants getting through the oiled air filters... it's hard to tell with such conflicting results - some say it's the best thing for the car others claim you'll kill your engine with dusty death in a few thousand miles... :-/
I had them in some of my 4x4s and everything was just fine, but the engines weren't as persnickety as a Porsche engine either. The HP gain is pretty modest, so if you want the sound there are other methods. |
I have a non-oiled cone air filter. Wouldn't this be OK?
I wonder what K&N has to say about the contaminants... |
