911 vs. 993 vs. 996.....HELPPPPPPPP

Hello everyone!

I am FINALLY old enough (36) to buy my first Porche. Probably like most of you, I have always wanted to have a Porche. I am finally financially able to do so.

I have done quite a bit of research within this site, however, need additional help from experience and knowledgeable members.

My budget ranges from $15,000 to $50,000 and the car will be a secondary car. I will only drive it 1-2 times per week, no more than 150 miles per week. I do not neccessarily care for a convertible or targa. I would love to have a turbo, but do not want possible ticket problems or additional maintenance issues.

I need a lot of help with model numbers and names.....PLEASE.....I think that I have learned that 87-89 is one model......90-94 is another model.....95-98 is another......99 to ??? If someone could please help identify the years for me first of all, before model letters, etc..., that would be extremely helpful.

Secondly, I need help with all of the different model letters....

C2...C4...C4S...GT2...GT3...SC...CS....TT...930... Etc....

This model information is very confusing to someone that has very limited knowledge of Porche. Detailed information is MUCH APPRECIATED.

As far as the car is concerned, which one do you think is the most suitable me and the way I will use the car (see above). I do not really like the 89 body, or the 95-98. I do like the 94 and the 99. Is the 94 a 960? Is the 99 a 996? I really like the wide body look. I do not like the slant nose or speedster look.

I obviously want to buy the best car I can for the money......and want the best car for resale as well. I would appreciate your information and opinions as to which car may be the most suitable for me. Also, where is the best place to find one? Ebay seems to have numerous. Our local dealer is very very small (Charleston, SC). I have heard a lot of good things about Brumos in Jacksonville, FL.

Again, thanks for all of your help!

If you dont like the 89 body...then you wont like the 65-88 body either...so the classic 911 is out.

The 94 is a 964 model...

The 99-2004 were the 996 models... these are characterized by their slanted headlights. You had to spend a lot of money to get one that had some curves to it aka widebody.

So much to say on this topic...you should buy the Porsche 911 Buyers Guide by Randy Leffingwell...available at Amazon.com...this will help you sort it out.

To answer your question...the car below is perfect for what you are looking for:

By the way it's " Porsche "
Good Luck with your search, you'll want to read as much as you can handle here and rennlist.com. Drive a 74-77 (mid car era), 78-83 (SC era) 84-89 ( Carrers era), 90-94 (964), 95-98 (993) or the water pumped 99-04 (996)

What is the Ebay item #. How much is this car and what is the mileage? Can anyone please give a thorugh response to my questions in the original post? I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, I forgot to mention one thing, I am 6'4" and 230 lbs. I tried sitting in a boxter several years ago and didn't fit. Is the 911 larger and more comfortable?

www.flat-6.net is an excellent site that details the differences of the model years, explains all those model letters, etc. Take a look. I bet you can get a lot of your questions answered there.

Thumbs up

Hi,
You mentioned you wanted a turbo but are worried about the maintenance. I have a daily driver 930 turbo cabrio (1988) and I LOVE IT. No problems what so ever for 4 years. You just need to properly maintain it. (i.e. adjust the valves every 10+K and change the oil every 2.5k plus other little things ..spark plugs etc.) These things are tanks. By the way Dr. Porsche designed some pretty infamous and feared tanks during WWII. You have waited this long, so buy the super Porsche of your childhood (the 930). I bought mine when I turned 33. Plus these things don't lose any value.

A few recommendations:

1) Research - web, books, forums (I recommend the Used 911 Story)
2) Narrow down your price range and models a bit - overwhelming otherwise
3) Find a good wrench in your area (ask around)
4) Get anything you are serious about PPIed
5) Buy the nicest example you can afford
