Any advice on installing a chip on a 964?
 

Hi....I just purchased a chip for my '91 964. Is there anything I should know before I install?

I heard of one guy blowing up his ECU while changing the chip....I want to make sure I don't do the same!

Don't do it. Total waste of money. You will probably end up with a engine with idle searching and less HP.

Just be really, really careful, and you will be fine. Take your time, that is the most important thing.

Be really careful pulling the old chip out. This is where you really need to take your time. You don’t want to bend the pins so much that they break off. Gently rock the chip back and forth, prying at either end with a small screwdriver, until it comes out. Be very, very patient.

I don’t know how you could blow up your ECU. A huge static electricity spark shouldn’t even do it, but to be safe, keep it grounded. One way to keep it grounded would be to get those grounding straps that Velcro around your wrists and attach to the ECH and a ground. Another way would be to put the ECU on a ground, and keep your elbows on the same ground while you are doing the work. Keep one part of your wrist on the ECU, your elbow on the ground, while your fingers do the work. It’s easier than it sounds. You’ll be fine.

Thanks guys.....much appreciated! :) I'll probably try installing it on the weekend. I only paid $60 bucks for it...so if I don't like the performance, I'll just put the old one back in and call it a day.

yep, dont do it, why risk a £20k engine on a $60 chip.

Get it remapped its the only way to optimise exactly to your engines current mechanical condition.
