993 wheel spacers
Hi,
Anyone one know the safe maximum size you can go with a spacer/shim on a 993 (mine is a T4) with standard wheel bolts and nuts. I have fitted mine with 6mm front and 8mm rear shim, looks great and give me more room (especially in the front) to clean the calipers. But I was thinking, I have reduced the amount of thread the nuts have to cling to to hold the wheel on. OK there are 5 but is there a minimum number of recommeded turns a nut should go on (and therefore a maximum spacer size)? Andre

You’ve got two issues to deal with here. One is the minimum number of turns on the nut, and the other is leverage on the hub.
For #1, I’ve heard you should turn the nut enough so that it threads down at least as far as the bolt is wide. In other words, if you have an 8mm bolt, the nut should go down at least 8mm, no matter how many turns that is. But this is just a rule of thumb. For #2, leverage, that is open to more discussion. How far out can you put the wheel and not apply too much leverage to the hub, axle, etc? This partially depends on the kind of roads you drive on and the kind of driving you do. I don’t have a good answer to this.
