1990 c4 oil thermostat blow out

As I was pulling onto my street 'Getting on it" my oil thermostat innards blew out and popped out my sharkfin and side valance, dumping most of the oil on my street and in my garage....Anybody ever hear of this happening?
New parts are ordered from Germany as 964 innards are out of stock in USA through Porsche Dealers.

I have heard stories if the oil cooler thermostat fails in the open position the thick cool oil can burst the oil cooler and related parts. Maybe a possibility? Any pics?

The innards are held in by a circlip. Under a few psi, if the circlip was rusty or something, it could easily blow through the sharkfin panel. Not a common occurence but possible. Also loose hose clamps (at least 2) in the area could have blown off. Methinks 911urge's comment deals more with high viscosity oil in the cooler causing too much back pressure for the aluminum.
