OEM radio

My OEM radio does not work when I enter the code but there is no response or the the radio will does not change when I enter the code.

I noticed that this has an amplifier under the passenger seat. What is the easiest way to install a new radio?

Do you have a new stereo head unit in mind? If you do, it's pretty much just a matter of sliding the old one out, and plugging the new one in. Just make sure you measure the new one well before you buy, so you're sure the faceplate will fit.

If I remember right the OEM radio has the same method of removal as the climate control unit...there should be a set of holes on either side that you use to pull it out with. I cut apart either side of a wire coat hanger to get my A/C unit out when I was fiddling with it.

If your amp and speakers are still stock, you might consider upgrading those as well too. Speakers go limp after a while (mine definitely are), and the stock amp isn't anything special.

the stock head unit/speakers/amp are weak and produce low quality sound.

installing a new head unit and retaining the stock amp (which is exceptionally bad) and speakers imo is questionable.

you may be well advised to fully upgrade the system and while you are at it install an i-pod dock or mp-3 dock in the glove box.

Does anybody have experience wiring an iPod dock to the glove box? I just put in a new stereo myself, and I've been trying to figure out the best way of doing it.

I just put in a new Alpine unit. It has an extension cable that I routed into the glove box via a small hole I drilled into it in the top left corner. I just plug into that and lay the iPod in there, mine has a rubber sleeve, so it doesn't slide around. The glovebox is rather thin plastic, so I doubt that you could do anything hard mounted.

If it's a Becker, go here: index

I had luck with them checking out my Boxster radio a few years ago.

Cool, thanks! I figured that's probably what I'd have to do in the end, but it's always good to check options before you start drilling.

Just took some pics today, here is how I did it. Now I can hook up my ipod, or, I bought one of those Porsche zip drives that looks like a key, so I can even load songs onto it and plug it into here. Really cool.

you might try over at rennlist to see if anyone has upgraded. basically the complete original audio set up in these cars (considering their street price when new) was bottom end , head unit, speakers, & especially amp....so most who are interested in decent sound (especially cab owners, highway speeds!) tend to upgrade. got to be lots of this stuff around.

if you are committed to original, good source will also be dismantlers, perhaps here

Thanks, I do not really care about the sound as long as it works. I have learned to live without some decent music.

Thumbs down

Okay you guys win I just bought a new head unit from crutchfield. I am able to mount the radio no problem it is the wiring that is different. The OEM radio only had a few wires and a round black plug with pins on it.

Is there an adaptor for this plug? Any help is appreciated, thanks

The round plug is a DIN plug - a German standard. There are adapters out there that for purchase - you may want to try Crutchfield.
