white smoke?
I just put some Techron in half a tank and got a wash. As I pulled out of a car wash, I noticed clouds (understatement) of white smoke - too much for a little water in the intake. Oil pressure dropped to 0.5 bar. Tail pipe innards coated with oil. Opened the right intake manifold, drained 4oz of oil - still more. The engine sounded smooth (no clanking but definitely suffered from oiled plugs) and can still be cranked. Obviously the ole 964 can't be driven now. Any ideas?

White smoke is usually water, did they shoot any water up the exhaust, it can happen. Oil in the intake could be over filled oil tank, recent oil change, that would also give you blue smoke, maybe.
I recently had 3 exhaust valve guides fail during a day at the track, heavy blue smoke at idle and it will foul your plugs, smoke clears up at approx 1200 rpm, that required a top end. Hopefully that's not the problem, top end runs about $6k If it is top end, don't forget to get the cylinders moon cut, worth about 7-10hp, not expensive considering, and it will still pass Ca smog. Good Luck, Don |

Dodged a bullet, cleaned a total f about 6 oz of oil from the intake system and cat pipe, ran the engine clean in 10 minutes. Still a puzzle: I topped the oil 2 weeks before with no problems. and am 1 qt low today All I can figure is I went into the carwash on a hot day with hot oil and the water cooled the thermostat to close suddenly causing a wave of oil in my tank to get sucked into the breather.
Still think I should "read" my oil filter and get a leakdown to be sure, hope my valve/guides are still good, but if $6k will let me have another 200,000+ miles, might be time for elective surgery. |
