Intermittent Speedo

'95 933. I'll get in the car and take off, speedometer stays at 0, hit a minor bump in the road and it jumps to life and stays working until the car sits for a few days. Loose connection and possibly some corrosion I assume? Any suggestions on where to look? Would also love a basic education on the components and locations.

Thanks

I think what I'd look at first is the electrical connections behind the speedo - in particular the ground. You can remove the speedo with your hands by pulling or twisting the face, or by using electrical cord as a strap wrench. If those connections don't fix it, then try as Mike suggests.

I think I once lubed a speedo cable on a car that was doing this. I just disconnected the cable from the back of the speedometer and let some lube flow down the cable. It might be worth a try before you replace your speedo or open up the gearbox or something drastic.

Speedos on cars of mid-80's vintage or newer usually have an electric speedo. So no cable to lube. 993's have an electric speedo.
