Oil Temp. index marks - 964

Hi,
I wonder if any member has ever researched what the index marks on the oil temp gauge actually represent in temp. F.???
I remember that on early 356 cars the gauges were actually marked with temp. C markings. My understanding is that the numbers frightened too many owners and so the company switched over to the unlabeled index marks, and have never gone back.
I would appreciate any data or test results which may have already been done.

In the reference Bill posted the indicator at about 8 o'clock is listed as 198 degrees and the one at 10 o'clock at 248 degrees. FWIW, my oil temp sensor was just replaced and the guage sent to Palo Alto spedometer for testing, calibration, and addition of numbers. Mine says the 8 o'clock mark is 180 and the 10 o'clock mark is 250. I had this done because I was afraid it was not operating properly as I was seeing temps of 150ish on very hot track days (and I did not believe it). I now know that my two oil coolers keep the temps to 200 or below even on hot days.

Thanks Bill and Tom,
That confirms it for me without running tests. Just about what I expected, and in line with other VDO gauges. I think the addition of numbers is a great idea Tom.
