Anyone know where I can buy a 3.6 motor?

found

I want to keep my car on the road while I rebuild in my spare time.

Looking for a complete motor (longblock considered).

964 or 993, just as long as it's a 3.6.

I have heard plenty of horror stories about LA Dismantler, but no
first hand experience......

Thank's for the heads-up, I wonder how many junk yards don't have horror stories.

My bet is that's where the phrase "Buyer beware" comes from.

Cliff, I don't like to bash, however I had an issue with LA Dismantler, too. I bought 964 pistons and cylinders that were supposed to be 35k miles and looked "brand new". They said they don't sell junk and assured me they'd be perfect. Well I paid and the pistons and cylinders were delivered. One cylinder had obvious nicks in it. There were obvious to the naked and untrained eye. I sent everything back and after a number of phone calls to them they refunded all of my original purchase + shipping. It took a few weeks and follow up. I was still out return shipping.

Had they even looked at the parts, they shouldn't have sent them. I don't think the junkyard business works with strong customer service.

I bought a non-running, but supposedly rebuilt engine from a private party and have had nothing but problems with that as well.

I'd strongly suggest being able to check out the engine thoroughly (in running condition) and / or buy from someone who's reputation is perfect.

OR hope to get very lucky.

I'd check with Steve Timmons. Cost may be a premium, but @ $6k + to rebuild, a $2k premium would be worth it many times over.
One of my friends bought a '95 993 rebuilt engine from Timmons for $14k, I think. It had 1k miles on it in his (timmon's) wifes car, but was thoroughly tested.
Good luck,

Doug

Doug

Thanks for the leads.

My best hope is to find a good running motor still in the car somewhere here in the Bay Area.

I sold a 3.0 a few months back and kept it in the car so any potential buyer could even take it for a test drive. I also always encourage a warm motor for any reliable leakdown numbers.
