GIAC chip

Thinking about having a shop install a GIAC chip and was wondering if it is really going to have a 65-70 Hp gain. I was also wondering if it was going to put alot of extra stress on the engine. The shop is charging $2600 for the chip with a switch to change it to stock programming for smog and warranty.

65 to 70 HP? No way! Who told you that? A turbo might get 50HP, but NA would be around 15.

And $2,600! Wow! Those chips are $300 to $500, depending on who you buy them from, and you can install them yourself in a few minutes, but the switch might be a few extra bucks.

What car is this for?

What year is your car? On a 964 or '95 993 it is a simple chip change. On my 993 I got about 8 hp. On a '96 you need to change the whole ECU and a '97 or '98 993 can be upgraded by sending your ECU out to have it re-flashed (program change not chip - so not easy to un-do).

A chip is usually $300-$500.
A new ECU for a '96 (which means buying a '97 or '98 ECU and having it flashed) can be $2500.
A flash to a '97 or '98 ECU is about $1k

In all cases realistic hp gains are modest and maybe 10ish. You could always pay $200 more and have a dyno run done before and after to see what it really is.

If the chip increases boost on your TT, you will get more than the typical 10 to 15 HP, but at a price. There is a reason the factory did not set the boost that high to begin with.

The chip is supposed to increase the boost form.9 to 1.4. What does that mean for the engine more torque on the turbos?

You will get more torque, for sure, but it will mean increased combustion pressure, which can cause pre-detonation. Plus, it is stressing your entire engine significantly more than .9 bar.

So what would be the best way to increase the hp in the car. Have the GIAC chip installed or change the turbos to the k24's (gt2). They both are around the same cost the only hard decision is what will give the car the most Hp with the least amount of additional wear on the engine.
