Theft recovery value- 993
Saw a lovely silver/ navy 1997 993 C4S 6 speed 84k miles, new clutch, resealed engine, new ceramic brakes, new valve guides, 4 new tires, etc etc-- for sale by a mechanic i know and trust. Car was keyed- hood and passenger front fender resprayed- otherwise perfect.
As this was a theft recovery, what % discount might apply v.s. identical car w/ perfect history? Any opinions/ info appreciated Thanks! |

Does this car carry a rebuilt or 'other' title?

Personally I am not as critical on a salvage title if the extent is damage due to vandalism such as keying and missing parts, flood/accident damage cars are another story, keep in mind that for a future sale the salvage title will be used as a negotiating tool but bottom line is that the mechanical integrity is there, buy it if you want it but keep in mind and and let the mechanic know of this concern of resale due tosalvage classification and hopefully you should be able to buy the car for 80 cents on the dollar which is what I would be willing to pay, also the fact that a reseal and other pertinent work was done should add a little premium, Great cars Good luck

Thanks to Chris- (i PM'd you) and Jonnyo for your thoughtful text. Various sources tell me 20-30 % off due to theft recovery title. Some tell me to pass on it entirely. This text is from seller-
"It was stolen when the car had 11,000 miles on it. It took 2 years for the vehicle to be recovered and put back on the road. Beverly Hills Porsche Audi dealership inspected it for damage from the theft. The only work they found on the car was maintenance related." Am concerned that it was missing an entire 2 years- as opposed to 2 weeks... They are asking $48k USD which seems high under the circumstances. The Feb and November Excellence have great 993 articles including fair values- they specify $45k for an excellent '97 C4S . My wife saw it and has been telling me daily to trade my black 87 for it- she's great! Any other ideas on price appreciated. Thanks! David |

David, its a great car but at the mileage and even though anticipated work was done for the miles
+ salvage title it is very overpriced!!!! Please do NADA price check, an excellent 97 C4S also probbly has much less miles for 45k, also a big value impact, price points for mileage are 50k and 100 k these mile marks affect values, there are alot of deals out there especially this time of year, don't rush into anything the patient buyer will get the best car/deal |

Seems high under the circumstances? For an 84k mile car, $48k is high period. With a clean title, should go for high-$30s-low-$40s. Subtract ~20% for salvage title and you're in business.
Tough situation given it's a mechanic you "know and trust". My MIL had a very nice low miles, perfectly maintained car and her trusted mechanic tried to lowball her by several $k. When it comes to buying and selling cars, even the nicest people can show an ugly face. |

Thanks for your candour gents. To correct-- its 54k miles- not an enormous difference under this scenario...but i hear you loud and clear. I believe my mechanic bot it from a customer- i truly hope he didn't pay too much. Will explore price range and buy my wife a bouquet...

Surely, you MUST be kidding if you are even considering paying anything REMOTELY close to that amount of $ for that car!!!! If you are, why don't we do this: I find you the same car, or better for $30K, and you pay me $15K commission/finders fee. That will save you $3K for upgrades. PM me if you are foolish enough to do either deal. ![]() You can do much, much better than a high-mileage, theft recovery, key damaged 97 for $48K... !!!! |

Now in 993 land ...

It is way too much money considering the car's history. It would be a decent price maybe, if the car had a clean history. I would think about it if it were 35k or less. Otherwise you will loose big bucks when it is time to buy the next toy. And it always will be, no matter what you think now.
Why not take 40k and buy a very nice and pampered C2, first owner etc. Then spend the leftover money for some decent brakes and suspension. Voila! George |
