Engine VIN Numbers

Hi gang!

Buddy of mine just bought a used 993 engine and we have a few questions.

1. where is the VIN number located on the 993 engines?

2. How to determine Year of the motor.

The engine purchased looks different than advertised.....

I don't think the VIN is located on the engine, just the chassis.

I can't recall if there is a serial number on the motor or not. I think there should be a motor type, something like M07. What numbers are stamped on the engine?

By the way, saying "VIN Number" is like saying "ATM Machine."

I think the 64W50806 is the engine serial number. Perhaps Adrian's book will list where this number falls in the 993 spectrum. I'm sure the book will also say what 993 motor the M64/24 is, like with varioram or not, ROW, RS, etc. I don't have the book or I would look it up for you.

As for the engine looking different that advertised, I wonder if you saw a varioram motor and got a non-varioram, or vice versa. You might want to post a picture of the motor (and the ad, if you can, go copy the pictures now if it is still available). We can tell you more with a picture.

6 = 6 cylinder
4 = M64/23 (USA/CAN) or M64/24 tiptronic (USA/CAN)
W = 1998
50806 = serial number

I think it's a standard ROW/Euro engine

6 = 6 cylinder
3 = M64/21 or M64/22 tiptronic
V = 1997
80509 = serial number

although the number on the block appears to be a standard 210 kW engine, who knows what modes gave been done in the past 20 years
