964 cabriolet turbo look?
Hi guys :
I have a question - i am going to look at a car this weekend. a 93 964 Cabriolet turbo body, tiptronic. My question is - how do i tell if the "turbo look" is factory or aftermarket? I may be in a position that doesn't allow me to "closely" inspect it, therefore, i want to see if i can tell by the VIN number or other number indicating on the chassis? Thanks in advance. Carson

Hi, I bought a 1992 C2 Turbo Look Coupe and I found the VIN number didnt help. In fact the Porsche history didnt record the fact it was a TL.
The car was definitely an original TL the body hadnt been hacked around it is all genuine. I had a collision repair shop give all the panels a thorough survey and they found no welds or plastic add ons. they also confirmed that it had not been smashed & repaired. Other bits like turbo brakes front/rear are fitted (as expected with a TL) The NZ Porsche agent believes I ended up an extremely rare TL C2 because the Porsche factory had the C2+turbo body bits to put together a car that would normally have been a C4. I bought the car off the internet but ended up having to pay $15k because the professional organisation that were supposed to have done an assesment missed the fact there was a horrendous knocking from the bearings. After some legal discussion they paid up $12k of the cost. I love the Turbo Body, its the way God meant for the 964 to look. ![]()

and the 1994 C4 widebody coupes and speedsters. The AR had full turbo suspension and early 91-92 turbo brakes the C4 did not come with the big reds fitted to the 1994 turbo but for some reason was fitted with the standard C2 brakes front and 964 turbo rears. This does not include non production cars like the 3.8RS and RSR. There should be an option sticker on the underside of the front hood and front cover of the owners manual Should have an option code. I believe it is 541 or something like that. Enter the codes here http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp and one should show up as a widebody option. BTW simon.marsh@xtr nice looking ride. We did not get the anniversary version here, would be my choice over a C4 widebody although nothing beats the torque of a turbo.

Thanks Anthony, the code is 491 (Turbo Look). The C2 TL is a nice ride but I agree the 964 twin turbo is the real deal.
Cheers Simon
