Start procedure: 1990 964
things are different from my '74 with hand throttle..easier in most respects, but wondering what procedure you guys use to start the 964?
when i went to denver to pick it up last week, it started up by just turning the key..in a heated warehouse. since then, and 1,000 miles, i 'm always starting it in anywhere from -5 to 35 degrees. i have to put my foot on the pedal and hold just a little gas to keep it from stalling when i first start. after a couple of blocks, it idles fine..no problems. what do you guys do to start a 964? ryan |
You are supposed to be able to start w/o touching the gas at all.
There are numerous things that can cause cold idle issues |
thanks, bill. i'll try a search when i can get some time.

There's an ISV (idle stabilization valve) on the top of the engine that often gets gunked up. That's the easiest one. Then we get into sensors...
Here is a good 964 specific site: http://www.porsche964.co.uk/ |
The DME has Porsche engine maps pre-programed in it and you can semi program your driving style into it. When you put your foot on the gas during starting the throttle position sensor should give you a engine fault light on the Tach because it's not fully closed. So don't do that.
I had the problem you describe on my RSA, took her in and they hooked up the Porsche hammer. My mech (Porsche Factory trained Master Mechanic) said that sometimes the DME gets a brain fart and there's a setting in the DME that needs to be reset for idle stabilation. Takes about 5 minutes to do. He reset it and I haven't had a problem since. I'd recommend that you get the hammer hooked up to her and check that first before starting to tear any parts off or spending any money.e Oh yeah, and he didn't charge me for the check/adjustment either, is that cool or what. That's one of the reasons I drive 60 miles to let him do the things I can't do myself. Good Luck, Don |
thanks for the site, don...lot's to learn about the new car. i feel almost lost after having my hands in a middie engine bay the past 6 years.
i'll have to see if my local p-car shop has 'the hammer'. don't know if this car has a chip or not. i need to go through the records with a fine-tooth comb this weekend. anyone recommend the use of a chip for a '90 964? 'no bad days', wong's chip? |

I'll bet $1.00 that the ISV and AFM (Air Fuel Meter) are gunked up a bit. In cold weather that gunk hardens and they dont work to well until a little engine heat softens the gunk. A few cans of Carb cleaner and couple of hours work and it should improve. |
stephen: where are they located on the 964? basic 'middie guy' here.. ;) i've got your dollar..lol.

I strongly suggest Porsche 911 Enthusiast's Companion: Carrera 2, Carrera 4, and Turbo 1989-1994 (Paperback) as a very good book on the 964. |
Ryan,
I have a few performance parts from my 964 that are for sale including my Cyntex performance chip programmed for a cat bypass, and a lwt flywheel. Parts will soon be posted in the classifieds, PM me for info. You will also want to check out the rennlist.com 964 forum. It is a very active board. Colin |
