'94 RS America
I'm pleading a bit of ignorance here. I recently joined the ranks of Porsche ownership with my '89 Carrera 3.2 Silver Anniversary.
However, I now have a lead on a '94 RS-A. 75K miles, Red, CD, A/C. No salt. Sounds good via talking with owner. I realize that I need a PPI and to go look at it. Probably can get it for $28K. Anyway, what I want to ask is...are the RS-A 964's that much more of a car than a standard 964? Are they special or is it more of a "trim" package. Please if I've offended anyone I did not mean to do so. I welcome all opinions and thoughts. Thanks! David

Ditto what Jack said.
If the RSA checks out, it is a deal at 29k. CD players were not stock or an option, so I'd pay particular attention to make sure it isn't a stock C2 that was modified to be like a RSA, or that it started out as a RSA and had a bunch of "creature comfort" after market stuff added on. You can also go the route of getting a nice 964 for low $20's, then making it RSA like for probably around $10k. Upgrade: -suspension -17" wheels -LWF -performance chip -LSD -RSA tail etc, etc. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Thanks, I just looked at the site recommended...nice! The car also has a Dansk(?) sport muffler and front rotors with holes.
I need to get a photo of the ID label and door label. David

The easy to verify if the car is a real RSA is to make sure that the last six digits of the VIN are 418xxx or 419xxx.
Also, 1994 RSA's should have "RS" in the VIN; '93's will have "PS". Be careful, some normal C2's have been advertised as RSA's. The '94 is MUCH rarer (the exact numbers are in the RS America website), but they have the rear jump seats like a normal Carrera. However, the cargo box in the '93 supposedly weighs more than the rear seats.

There's a website that decodes the VIN. I can't remember what the url is though.

It's a disappointment, compared to the Euro RS - at least in the power department - and a regular 964 can be modified without too much trouble. They go for too much a premium IMHO. On the other hand, as others have stated above, the price seems very good. Also, it depends on what you want to do with it. I am interested in performance over originality, so I would hesitate to buy a car that's special when I could modify a regular car to my liking ...

My favorite quote off the site: "RS America was introduced it was the cheapest 911 available and sold for $10,000 less than a fully equipped C2. Ironically, nowadays the market value of an RSA is $10,000 higher than a C2 in similar condition with similar mileage."

I would agree it is a steal at that price but for the same money you can buy a low mileage C2 and modify it to be just as good. Most RSA's if optioned only weighed 50 pounds or so less than the C2.

Be careful with the VIN as Anthony said. In the hunt for my 964 C2, I seem to remember pulling a VIN for a standard 964, the Carfax report listed the car as a RSA, when in fact it wasn't.
If someone wanted to, they could argue the point that they are selling you a RSA because the VIN says it is, but in fact it's a normal 964.

I agree that the RSA is not in the same league as the Euro RS, but it is still very desireable. Lighter weight, no power steering, sport suspension, sport seats,spoiler,17" wheels etc. As stated above it would would cost ~$10k to add these mods to a C2, but you would probably not recoup that $10k when its time to sell. I wouldn't hesitate to pay a $10k premium over a regular C2, knowing that the RSA will always hold its value and eventually begin to appreciate.

If it's a RSA with orig seats, no crash history, etc, that is a DEAL!
You'll be very happy with your purchase.... |

I've got one, I paid 30k for one with 31.5k miles, took it on a 3000 mile test drive, East to West Coast. I wrote a article with Keiths help, posted on rsamerica.net, under members articles, "3000 mile test drive". At 28k it's a deal, you won't be disappointed.
Email Keith at rsamerica.net, he'll help you figure out the vin to assure you that it's a real one or not. He's also got the RS side decals and other items for the RSA for sale on his site. Good Luck, Don Last edited by SanDiegoDon; 02-22-2007 at 10:23 AM.. |
