964 leak - "through the case" stud - help please!
Hi,
I've had many 911s (and many leaks). But this one is new for me. It's coming through a case stud of a '92 964. The stud is about 4" northeast of the oil drain plug (see photo). I suspect that it would be caused by a failed internal o-ring. That would mean that the case would have to come apart to repair it! Has anyone ever seen a leak like this this? Thanks! Jerry ![]() |

I don’t see any leaks in that photo, which stud are you referring to again? It looks like you've clean it all up.
How much is it leaking? I have a leak that would require a top-end rebuild to fix. But the drips don’t even make it to the garage floor, nor do I need to add oil. I see no need to fix the leak. Perhaps your leak is in this category?

Thx for your reply. My leak is coming from a stud that, appears to, come through the case. It's near the top of the photo, in the middle. Oil comes out through the nut, and streams down the case. You can see a bit of oil on the nut but, yes, I had cleaned it up before taking the photo. It's not a lot of oil but more than I've ever seen. Jerry

If it is "not a lot of oil" then you probably don't have anything to worry about. Everyone has a different opinion about what a lot of oil is, though.
Coul you just remove the nut, but some sort of rubber gasket under it, and then retighten? That's not the correct fix, of course, but it might stop the leak.

I'd like to understand it better before I touch it. But that's what I thought of doing. I'd say that a drip is too much oil! Thx, Jerry

I wouldn't start undoing case nuts over an oil drip. You need to post this question on the engine rebuild forum, where you will get the most educated answer.

I think I remember seeing posts on this before in the re-build and the 911 tech forum. It is not unheard of, just not common. IIRC!!! the answer is just as stated above. Remove the nut, VERY carefully remove the o-ring so as not to allow debris to enter the engine, replace o-ring, replace nut, torque. As the engine sits this "assembly" is not keeping the engine "together." The through bolt does it's job when the engine is running. Please do a could of searches, but I think this is what you will find.
