need buying advise and tips for a 964
HI Guys, Though mechanically minded and not to shy do my own repairs (VW Golf owner) I'm relatively new to porsche scene and about to embark upon the purchase of a 1991 964 Carerra 2 with 90,000 miles on the clock.
Could you give me some tips as to what I need to look for interms minimising surprises & repair bills : modification/rectifications ie stainless steel exhaustr heat exchangers engine functions ie idle speeds, oil leaks or tensioners, etc. Any buying tip info would be very much appreciated. Regards, Jaz

Do a search on this forum as well as http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/forumdisplay.php?f=59
Also check out http://www.porsche964.co.uk/ - there is a buyer's guide there. Good luck and have fun with the new ride! |

Make sure it has had 60K and 90K service or you are going to be out 2K right from the get go. Also look for last time the valves were adjusted.

serving the 964 - access problems
Thanks Guys,
I've regularly serviced my own cars, would the 964 be an easy DIY serviceable car? I hear that you have to dismantle the exhaust and various other parts to access spark plugs. Is access for an oil change and oil filter easy. Cheers, Jaz

The exhaust and heat exchangers are not difficult to uninstall. The oil change is easy, the filter is on the right side in the engine bay, very easy to access.

http://p-car.com/diy/diy.html - it's for a 993, but the majority of the info is identical for a 964.

90-91 models came without cylinders to head seals. some cars leaked badly while others not a drop. many cars have had the seals added by now. find out what flywheel they have..mine had the original often problematic dual-mass replaced with a lightweight. dual dizzy needs a vent kit installed to protect its belt from ozone (cheap part, btw). check EVERYTHING on the climate control. the main unit can fail or the servos that control everything as opposed to the old cable controls ($$). 964's are a lot of fun..just a little more complex, particularly in the electrical department than prior 911's.
